Occupational Health and Safety in the Construction Industry—Protecting Workers From Heat Stress
Abstract:Heat stress, having physiological and psychological effects on workers, can lead to reduction of work enthusiasm and productivity, increased incident rate, heat illness, and death. The construction industry is found to be more susceptible to heat stress than other industries because construction workers are subjected to heat stress not only from outdoor strenuous physical work but also in confined working spaces which could be even worse. This study attempts to address this pressing need of the industry by deriving scientific algorithm. Experimentation was adopted in this study to detect impending attacks of heat stress, and by recommending pertinent health and safety measures. A set of good practices and indices, namely, heat tolerance time, optimal recovery time, and optimal work-rest schedule, has been developed and adopted to prevent the occurrence of heat stress on construction site. To further ensure the health and safety of site personnel working in hot weather, a series of anti-heat stress projects for enhancing the microclimate around the workers’ body have been conducted. Anti-heat stress clothing for construction workers was designed. Effectiveness of personal cooling equipment for protecting workers from heat stroke was evaluated. Personal cooling systems for combating heat stress in the construction industry will be developed.
