Molecular spintronics

Spin-based electronics is one of the emerging branches in today’s nanotechnology and the most active area within nanomagnetism. So far spintronics has been based on conventional materials like inorganic metals and semiconductors. Still, molecular electronics emerged several decades ago as a promising possibility to complement or even to replace conventional inorganic electronics when it goes nano. In this context, a natural evolution of molecular electronics is that of using magnetic molecules, as well as molecule-based materials, as components of new spintronic systems [1].
In this talk I will present the major trends in this area, namely the development of spintronic devices incorporating molecular components, and the evolution towards single-molecule spintronics. In the first part I will introduce the spinterface concept that is key to understand the interactions occurring in the hybrid interface formed by a magnetic electrode and an organic spin collector and the resulting properties [2]. I will also report on the fabrication of spin-polarized optoelectronic devices such as the spin-OLEDs [3]. These devices provide a direct observation of spin injection from magnetic electrodes into the frontier electronic levels of a molecular semiconductor (i.e., to the HOMO and LUMO levels). In the second part I will show how the spin state of molecular spin crossover (SCO) complexes can be sensed electronically in devices formed by SCO/graphene heterostructures [4].

个人简介:
Prof. Eugenio Coronado received his PhD degrees in Chemistry (1985, University of Valencia, Spain) and in Physics (1990, University of Strasbourg, France). He then became a Full Professor at the University of Valencia since 1993, Director of the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) since 2000, as well as Scientific Director of the European Institute of Molecular Magnetism, EIMM (since 2008) and President (since 2014). He is a member of the Academia Europaea (2009) and of the Spanish Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (2010). He has received awards including Humboldt research award (2020); Medal of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics (RSEF) (2019) and Medal of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) (2009). His research interests lie in the fields of Molecular Magnetism, Multifunctional Molecular Materials and Polyoxometalate Chemistry. In the last 10 years his research has evolved towards Molecular Spintronics, an emergent new area at the intersection of Molecular Magnetism with Molecular Electronics and Spintronics, and to Molecular Quantum Technologies. Prof. Coronado has published more than 680 papers in peer-reviewed journals with a total number of citations more than 38000 and an h-index of 95 (SCOPUS).
