摘要:


Low band gap (LBG) polycyclic aromatic compounds exhibiting near infrared (NIR) absorption/emission have important applications as NIR dyes for organic solar cells, bio-imaging and nonlinear optics. In addition, open-shell biradical character could be observed for certain type of LBG compounds which showed unique magnetic, electronic and optical properties. We have developed different approaches to prepare a series of soluble and stable LBG polycyclic aromatic compounds. These include: (1) zig-zag edged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (e.g. periacene), (2) Z-shaped zethrenes and (3) extended p-quinodimethane with a singlet open-shell ground state, and (4) hybrid systems by fusion of a PAH (e.g. perylene and anthracene) with porphyrin or boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY). I will introduce their challenging synthetic chemistry and their interesting physical and material properties. I will also discuss their potential applications for solar cells, field effect transistors and bio-imaging.
