Charge generation dynamics in non-fullerene organic photodiodes

Efficient electron-hole separation at organic donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions is desirable for both solar cell and photodetection applications. For organic solar cells, recent advances in non-fullerene acceptors have led to a significant improvement in device performance (>15%). One key reason that enables this improvement is the much reduced voltage loss in non-fullerene systems compared to the conventional fullerene-based systems, where a large loss is resulted from the requirement of a large D/A energy offset and the large extent of non-radiative charge recombination via both singlet and triplet states. In this talk I will discuss recent experimental findings based on ultrafast spectroscopy that reveal the fundamental difference between charge generation dynamics in non-fullerene and fullerene-based systems, and these findings call for a radical shift in the way that organic solar cells are designed and optimised. Furthermore, the combination of efficient charge generation and inherent mechanical softness of organic materials open up numerous opportunities for the development of wearable photodetectors, and a discussion on this subject will also be presente
