Research Fields

Stem Cells and regenerative medicine, translational medicine, applications of stem cell-derived hepatocytes in pharmaceutical study and clinics, liver injury and regeneration, cellular origination and transformation mechanism of cancer stem cells, specific-targeting of cancer stem cells.

Achievements

Dr. Duan had led to the researches from projects funded by NIH, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, UC Davis as principal investigator and co-investigator, and major contributions from these researches include developing highly efficient differentiation of functioning hepatocytes from human pluripotent stem cells with almost homogenous population which can be used in clinics and pharmaceutical industry, revealing that WNT and MAPK/ERK signaling pathways co-regulate the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells towards hepatocytes, determining the origin and formation of a liver cancer stem cell and demonstrated the fusion is an approach of formation of human cancer stem cells, establishing clonogenically culturing and expanding of cancer stem cells in vitroand developing gene therapy for bi-functional treatment of human alpha 1-Antitrypsin deficiency. Those findings were published in GastroenterologyStem CellsStem Cells Translational MedicineStem cells and Development, Liver International in over 60 papers and 30 conference proceedings. Dr. Duan was awarded with UC Davis Health System Excellent Achievement, Science and Technology Progress (2nd Class) of Ministry of Education of China, Excellent Young Core Teachers of Universities and Colleges, etc. Dr. Duan also has served over 20 journals as the editor, editorial board member and reviewer.
