Training goals:
This program is committed to cultivating new-era, all-around high-level foreign language innovative talents with solid theoretical foundations and research innovation awareness, familiarity with the frontiers and development trends of this discipline, proficiency in research methods of this discipline, and cultural confidence and strong social responsibility. The specific requirements are as follows:
1. Adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China, maintain the correct political direction, love the motherland, abide by laws and disciplines, have good professional ethics and team spirit, and actively serve the socialist modernization construction.
2. Profound theoretical foundation of foreign languages and literatures, familiar with the development history and the latest progress of this subject, have in-depth systematic professional knowledge and rigorous logical thinking ability, have distinct innovative awareness and strong scientific research ability, can carry out scientific research independently, and the research results reach the international forefront or the domestic advanced level. Adhere to academic ethics and abide by academic norms.
3. Cultivate strong academic practice capabilities. Cultivate the professional knowledge and skills of doctoral students in the process of scientific research projects. Comprehensively train the academic practice capabilities and vocational development awareness of doctoral students in the organization, implementation and preparation of academic conferences.
4. Possess good overall quality. Be able to undertake teaching, scientific research, foreign affairs, management and other work related to this subject in colleges, research institutions, enterprises and institutions, international organizations, becoming high-level innovative talents and managers with international perspective.

Educational System and Duration of Study
The standard study period for doctoral students is 4 years,and the maximum duration of study (including academic leave) should not exceed 7years in principle.
Credit Hours and Basic Requirements for Course Study
1. The doctoral program in Foreign Languages and Literatures is conducted on acredit system, with a minimum of 18 credits required. The course study periodis generally one year. The course system covers public required courses, professional required courses, professional elective courses, and public elective courses. Students are allowed to select courses across disciplines and majors. The public required courses and public elective courses follow the relevant school regulations. The professional foundation courses and professional elective courses are organized and taught by the college, with exams or assessments. Students who pass the defense of their doctoral dissertations will be granted graduation.
2. To broaden their knowledge and promote interdisciplinary learning, in addition to the required courses mentioned above, doctoral students are encouraged to select elective courses not listed in their specific field of study (including courses from disciplines other than foreign languages and literature) based on their previous academic background, knowledge structure, and research needs. Doctoral students admitted across different first-level disciplines should complete academic courses for amaster's degree in their major (at least 3 compulsory courses) under the guidance of their supervisor (or supervisory committee). Such courses can be arranged after the first academic year and are not credited.
