“The Belt and Road” Education Forum Seminar on Internationalization Strategy for East Asian Universities was held at South China University of Technology on the 19th of January. The seminar was addressed by a number of dignitaries, including T Prof. Qiu Xueqing, Vice President of South China University of Technology; M.L.SirinRongsong of the Thai Royal Family; Mr. Liu Baoli, Executive Secretary and Secretariat of the Organizing Committee, China ASEAN Education Exchange Week; MS. Naparat Phirawattanakul, Senior Programme Officer, ASEAN University Network; and Mr. Li Jinjun, Director of Department of Education of Guangdong Province.

Prof. Qiu Xueqing made a welcome speech on behalf of the school and expressed willingness to work together with universities in ASEAN countries, with the purpose of making further contributions to building a closer Community of Destiny. Soon afterwards, the unveiling of the China-ASEAN Education and Training Alliance took place and was witnessed by representatives of the universities.

Representatives from 8 universities including Tianjin University, Raman University of Malaysia, South China University of Technology, Chiang Mai University of Thailand, Guizhou University, Cottonzee University of Cambodia, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Thailand’s Mahidol University made key speeches at the meeting. All of these universities shared their vast experience in international exchange and cooperation.

Moreover, in order to continuously enhance the close cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities in areas of personnel training, scientific research and social development, the meeting also placed emphasis on “International Innovative Talents Cultivation Modes of Higher Education under the Belt and Road Initiative”, “Modes of International Cooperation between Science and Engineering Colleges under the Belt and Road Initiative” and “Teaching Modes of English-medium Programs in ‘Double First-class’ Universities”. Participants reported that the meeting provided a sound platform for communication and exchange between various universities in East Asia, and laid a solid foundation for promoting substantive cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities.

The meeting aimed to set up a communication platform for China’s universities to explore key areas of cooperation in higher education and establish effective means and mechanisms of cooperation. This incorporated promoting the exchange of teachers and students, including academic exchanges, as well as research cooperation and other aspects of international cooperation and development among universities in East Asia. In attendance were nearly 70 heads of foreign affairs from more than 30 universities in East Asia, Hong Kong, Macao, as well as China’s “E9” Universities, China-ASEAN Engineering University Alliance, and China-ASEAN Education and Training Alliance.
