Abstract: Layered Mn oxides are widely spread Mn oxide minerals in soils and sediments. The oxides have extraordinarily high metal sorption capacities due to abundant structural defects and nanometer sizes. They are strong oxidizers and the most oxidizing minerals in natural environment Thus, the oxides play an important role in fate and transport of toxic metals and redox-sensitive compounds, and have been used for pollution control to remove toxic metals and organic pollutants. The chemical composition of layered Mn oxides is not stoichiometric and the structure varies as well, both of which strongly affect their metal sorption and oxidation reactivity. In this presentation, I will talk about the factors affecting the variations of layered Mn oxide structure and chemical composition, and how the variations affect the reactivity of the oxides.

  

报告人简介:

朱孟强博士目前在美国怀俄明大学生态系统与管理系任环境土壤化学方向助理教授。朱博士2002年本科毕业于华北电力大学(保定)环境工程专业,毕业后考入中国科学院生态环境研究中心。2006年开始跟随特拉华大学Donald Sparks教授攻读环境土壤化学博士,2010年毕业。在2013年加入怀俄明大学之前,朱博士在美国劳伦斯国家实验室做博士后研究。朱博士的研究方向主要涉及环境铁和锰氧化物的生成,结构以及在矿物-水界面上的吸附和氧化还原反应。课题组同时在开辟新方向,研究土壤磷素的生物地球化学循环。朱博士的课题组大量应用各种同步辐射X-射线技术。目前已发表约50篇文章,近半数发在Environmental Science and Technology, Geochemica Cosmochimica Acta 等杂志。。
