Dr. Bruce E. Rittmannis Regent’s Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Centerfor Environmental Biotechnology in the Biodesign Institute at Arizona StateUniversity. His research focuses on the scientific and engineering fundamentalsneeded to “manage microbial communities to provide services to society.”Dr.Rittmann is an international leader in the fields of biofilm kinetics,microbial bioenergy, microbial detoxification, molecular microbial ecology,bioremediation, and biogeochemical modeling, who has published over 540 papersand archived 9 US patents. Dr. Rittmann is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Sciences. He was awarded the firstClarke Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Water Science and Technology fromthe National Water Research Institute and the Walter Huber Research Prize andthe Simon Freese Award from ASCE. Together with Dr. Perry McCarty, Dr. Rittmannauthored the textbook Environmental Biotechnology: Principles and Applications(McGraw-Hill Book Co.), which is translated into Spanish, Chinese, Korean, andJapanese.

This presentation lays out theprinciples for the rapidly advancing field of Environmental Biotechnology. It focuses on applications of molecular biology,mathematical modeling, and new materials and configurations to achieve goalsunheard of only a few years ago. The talk ends with anintroduction to the Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology, where weapply the principles.
