Abstract

This is a small research project cooperated by chemical engineering institute and TOTAL that funds the project. This paper based on the study of some hazard identification methods, and most of the paper is about the tradition one, checklist.

In this paper, kinds of the main hazard identification techniques will be introduced briefly. As for the checklist, I will perform an in depth study of the use of this kind of hazard identification, which most based on the study in TOTAL Refining & Chemicals site in FoShan. And the what-if checklist technique is the main format when apply the checklist in hazard identification, which combines Checklist with What-if analysis. Beside, I will introduce a newly method that has a wide range of application in coal mine safety.

To complete this paper and have a comprehensive understanding of these hazard identification techniques, I receive elementary training in the TOTAL Refining & Chemicals located in Foshan for a week, where I can closely study the basic equipments. In this paper, I will perform the use of checklist for the conveying belt.

Abstract

This study is a small research project funded by TOTAL Refining & Chemicals. The main object of this study is to compare different hazard identification techniques and find out their advantages and shortcomings, which helps to make guideline for choosing best technique in process safety management.

Hazard analysis involves the identification of hazards at a facility and evaluating possible scenarios leading to unwanted consequences. The hazard analysis stage is a very important part of the risk management process, as no action can be made to avoid, or reduce, the effects of unidentified hazards. The methods currently used in hazard identification and risk assessment are Checklist analysis, What-If analysis, HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, ETA and SWIFT. With received preliminary training in the TOTAL Refining & Chemicals site in Foshan, the hazard identification and risk assessment for a styrene storage tank is a vital case in this paper with detailed description to study, analyze and elaborate, classify and categorize the main risk analysis and risk-assessment methods.

The paper is under the instruction and review of the experts from TOTAL Refining & Chemicals.
