Faculty Recruitment


School of Emergent Soft Matter at South China University of Technology invites applicants for faculty positions. Possible openings could be in any of the following academic areas: materials science, chemistry, biology, physics, and related interdisciplinary fields, with a particular focus on emerging areas include information and electronic materials/technologies, advanced energy storage materials/technologies, micro/nano mechanics/technologies, bioinspired materials/technologies, and advanced materials for health and medical applications.

Position

  1. Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas)

Program Overview

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas), known as the “Overseas Excellent Young Scientist” program, has been established since 2021. It aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars from overseas (including non-Chinese nationals) who have made significant achievements in natural sciences, engineering, and technology to return to China (or come to China) for work. The program allows scholars to independently choose their research directions and conduct innovative studies, promoting the rapid growth of young scientific and technological talents, cultivating a group of exceptional academic leaders who are expected to enter the forefront of global science and technology.

Qualifications and Expectations

  1. Comply with the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, possess good scientific ethics, and conscientiously embody the spirit of scientists in the new era.

  2. Born on or after January 1st, 1985.

  3. Hold a doctoral degree.

  4. The main research focus shall cover natural sciences, engineering, and related fields.

  5. Since obtaining a doctoral degree until the application deadline in 2026, applicants are generally required to hold a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D organization for at least 36 consecutive months. Exceptions may be made for those who obtained their doctoral degree overseas and demonstrate particularly outstanding achievements, allowing for a relaxation of the work experience requirement.

  6. Have acquired research or technical achievements recognized by peers, and possess the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field.

  7. Applicants who have not yet returned to work in China full-time or who returned to work in China on or after January 1, 2024, must resign from their overseas positions or have no employment overseas upon receiving the funding notification. After receiving the funding notification, the recipient must resign from overseas work and return to China to work full-time for at least 3 years.

Support and Benefits

01 Working Conditions

  1. Appointment Position: Senior academic position is offered on the public institution system.

  2. Qualified postdoctoral fellows recruited by those who are employed in faculty positions will be paid for by the university for two years.

  3. Start-up research funds (3.5-5.5 million RMB) and suitable lab and office space will be provided.

  4. The university will support faculty members to apply for various competitive grants from the national government, Guangdong province, Guangzhou municipality and enterprises to obtain scientific research support.

02 Living Benefits

  1. Salary: a competitive salary package corresponding to the position will be provided comparable to that of top international universities. For applicants who have obtained faculty positions in world-class universities, the salary can be negotiated with reference to the applicant's current salary and benefits.

  2. Tax benefits: subject to preferential personal income tax exemption benefits in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). For qualified talents, the government will provide financial subsidies for the portion of personal income tax paid in Guangzhou exceeding 15% of taxable income, and this subsidy is exempt from personal income tax.

  3. Housing benefits: on-campus rental apartment and a housing subsidy of RMB 2.75 million will be provided according to relevant policies of NSFC, Guangdong province and Guangzhou municipality.

  4. Health care: high-quality on-campus healthcare can be provided for faculties and their families.

  5. Talent green card: Guangdong Provincial and Guangzhou Municipal Government provide the talent green cards that offer access to specialized services catering to talents, covering housing, healthcare, children’s education, and spouse employment.

  6. Other benefits: according to relevant Chinese policies for non-Chinese citizens, the university will pay the employee component of Chinese social insurance, and help with children’s enrollment in the university’s kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools.

2. Tenure-Track Associate Professors / Tenured Associate Professors | Professors 

Qualifications and Expectations

  1. Have engaged in continuous research for over two years at universities, research institutions, or R&D divisions of renowned enterprises (domestically or internationally) with outstanding achievements; or

  2. Demonstrate exceptional potential for scientific research and technological innovation, with a high-impact research direction that could position the candidate as a future leader in their field.

Support and Benefits

  1. Salary: a competitive salary corresponding to the position will be provided comparable to that of top international universities. For leading talents or exceptionally outstanding young scholars, Salary is open to negotiation on a case-by-case basis.

  2. Housing: on-campus public rental housing may be provided, subject to availability.

  3. Senior Academic Benefits: tenure-track Associate Professors positions and above will receive Chinese social insurance, housing provident fund, and healthcare benefits.

  4. Academic Resources & Support: tenure-track Associate Professors positions and above will hold the formal title of “Professor” and doctoral supervision qualifications. They will receive guaranteed PhD student allocations, support for postdoctoral recruitment, and resources to establish a research team.

  5. Funding & Facilities: generous start-up funding and access to well-equipped research facilities.

  6. Grant Assistance: guidance from leading experts for securing national, provincial, and municipal research grants.

  7. Education: priority admission for children at the university’s kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools
