Nature—the creator of all life—crafts materials with extraordinary properties through intricate hierarchical structures. For generations, Nature has been the source of inspiration for scientists and engineers to innovate and transform our world. By learning from nature, our group design and engineer advanced materials with bioinspired hierarchical structures that span molecular, nano, micro, and macro scales. In our special 4M approach, we use multi-scale material processing technologies to create a wide range of materials, from hard ceramics to soft hydrogels and aerogels. In this presentation, I will highlight our work on PVA-based organo-hydrogels, fabricated through a freeze-casting-assisted solution substitution process. These hydrogels, with tendon-like hierarchical structures, exhibit outstanding stretchability, strength, and fracture toughness, showing potential for flexible electronics and sensors. Additionally, I will showcase our direct-ink-write 3D printing technique, which aligns ceramic platelets within a polymer matrix, resulting in composite organo-hydrogels with tunable mechanical performance while retaining excellent electrical conductivity. We have also extended this approach to aerogels, combining electrospinning with freeze casting to produce multifunctional aerogels with enhanced mechanical and functional properties. By merging nature-inspired design with advanced manufacturing, we aim to innovate advanced materials for diverse applications.

翟玮,现任新加坡国立大学机械工程系助理教授,从事多功能材料的制造和应用研究。2011年本科毕业于北京科技大学材料系,2015年博士毕业于剑桥大学工程系,2015至2019年在新加坡制造技术研究院担任研究员。现任《Materials & Design》和《Materials today communications》杂志编辑。其工作发表于Nature Communications、Science Advances、Advanced Materials、Materials Today、Advanced Functional Materials、Acta Materialia、JMPS等期刊。
