Professor Vivian W.W. Yam is currently the Philip Wong Wilson Wong Professor in Chemistry and Energy and Chair Professor at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). She obtained her BSc (First Class Hons) in 1985 and PhD in 1988 both from HKU. After two years on the faculty of the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong (now City University of Hong Kong), she joined her alma mater in 1990, rising through the academic rank of Senior Lecturer (1995), Reader (Professor) (1997), and was appointed Chair Professor in 1999. She was elected to Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2001 at the age of 38 as the youngest member of the CAS, Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2012, Fellow of the TWAS in 2006, Foreign Member of Academia Europaea in 2015, and Founding Member of The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong in 2015.
She was the Laureate of 2011 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award and recipient of 2005/06 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Centenary Medal, 2015 RSC Ludwig Mond Award, 2016 Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association (APA) Masuhara Lectureship Award, 2006 Japanese Photochemistry Association (JPA) Eikohsha Award, 2016 Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry (JSCC) International Award, 2005 State Natural Science Award, 2014 Chinese Chemical Society-China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) Chemistry Contribution Prize, 2011 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, Docteur Honoris Causa (Université de Rennes 1, 2013), 2007-08 Frontiers in Chemical Research Distinguished Lectureship (TAMU), 2013 Seaborg Lectureship (UC Berkeley), 2016 Lee Lectureship (U Chicago), 2016 Lavoisier Lectureship (U Paris Diderot), 2017 KAIST Chemistry Distinguished Lectureship Award, 2018 Charles Force Hutchison Lectureship (U Rochester), 2007 Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, 2000-01 Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship, 2002 Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong, 2008 Hong Kong Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award, 2015 Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS), and Leader of the Year 2015, etc. She has published over 480 journal articles in international SCI journals.
Professor Yam currently serves as the Associate Editor of the ACS journal, Inorganic Chemistry, Volume Editor of the series Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II, and Series Editor of Topics in Current Chemistry and RSC Energy and Environmental Series. She currently serves on a number of International Editorial Advisory Boards of international SCI journals and book series, such as Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, Chem, Accounts of Chemical Research, Chemical Reviews,ACS Nano, Chemistry of Materials, ACS Omega, Progress in Inorganic Chemistry, ChemPhysChem, New Journal of Chemistry, Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, Inorganica Chimica Acta, and International Editorial Boards of international SCI journals such as Coordination Chemistry Reviews, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, Nano Research, Comments on Inorganic Chemistry, Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, etc. She also serves as President of the Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association (APA). Her research interests include inorganic and organometallic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, photophysics and photochemistry, and molecular functional materials for sensing, optoelectronics and energy research.
