The predecessor of the microelectronics science and engineering major of South China University of Technology is the major of semiconductor materials and devices. South China University of Technology is one of the first 10 engineering colleges in the country to establish this major. Afterwards, it has undergone changes in professional names such as semiconductor physics and devices, microelectronics technology, integrated circuits and system integration, and electronic science and technology. It has formed a complete talent training system including undergraduate-master-doctorate, and is the first national integrated circuit talent training base in South China and the first electronic and information engineering doctoral authorization school.
In 1958, the major of semiconductor Materials and Devices was established.
In 2003, electronic science and technology was approved as a prestigious major of Guangdong Province.
In 2004, the School was approved as the National IC Talent Training Base of the Ministry of Education .
In 2011, the School was approved as one of the first 61 pilot universities in China under the program of Outstanding Engineers in Electronic Science and technology.
In 2015, the School was approved as a demonstration College of Microelectronics of the Ministry of Education.
In 2018, the School of Microelectronics was established.
In 2019, the School of Microelectronics enrolls students in Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of Technology, which is one of the first industrial colleges in Guangdong Province.
