2025-07-09 34

The Opening Ceremony

Guangzhou recently hosted the Second Youth Forum on Deep-Sea Equipment, bringing together some of the most promising young scholars in the field. The event was led by South China University of Technology (SCUT), with co-organizers including the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, Harbin Engineering University, Ocean University of China, and several other leading research institutions. Guided by the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21, the forum welcomed over 150 experts, scholars, and emerging researchers from top universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Also in attendance were prominent figures from the fields of marine research, engineering, and policy, as well as industry leaders from major marine science organizations.

Opening Remarks by President Prof.Tang Hongwu

Now is the time to invest in our ocean future, said Tang Hongwu, President of South China University of Technology and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in his opening remarks. He highlighted SCUT's recent advances in smart ocean technology and offshore wind power systems. With deep-sea equipment technology now a national priority, we are empowering young scientists to take the lead.

The forum focused on three key innovation areas: next-generation deep-sea exploration technologies, sustainable ocean resource development, and advanced marine energy solutions.

Remarks by Zhang Yongtao and Yang Huifang

China has made significant progress in core deep-sea equipment technologies, said Zhang Yongtao, Deputy Director of the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21. He highlighted recent achievements in underwater vehicles and resource mapping systems. Looking ahead, he emphasized three key priorities: improving cross-disciplinary research coordination, focusing on practical applications, and expanding opportunities for young researchers in national projects.

Yang Huifang, Deputy Director-General of Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, outlined new investments designed to establish the province as a leader in deep-sea innovation. 'We are upgrading research facilities, increasing funding, and strengthening university-industry partnerships,' she stated.

Keynote Speeches

The forum featured leading experts such as Zhang Si, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Duan Huiling, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who discussed breakthroughs including the Chinese Dream research vessel and advanced seafloor observation systems.

This forum demonstrates what young scientists can achieve through collaboration, said one attendee. We are not only exploring the ocean but also finding ways to protect and utilize it responsibly.

SCUT's marine science and engineering teams played a key role in organizing a landmark forum for China's ocean research community, shaping the trajectory of future marine equipment innovation. Jointly hosted by SCUT's Schools of Marine Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering & Transportation, and Automation Science and Engineering, the event is expected to advance the university's marine-related academic programs, interdisciplinary research, and high-level talent development.
