The International Conference on Nonlinear Analysis organized by School of Sciences South China University of Technology was successfully held from December 13th to 15th at Shaw Building of Humanities. The conference was sponsored by Prof. Boling Guo (academician of CAS, dual employment professor of SCUT) and Prof. Thomas Yizhao Hou (California Institute of Technology, Head of Department of Applied Mathematics, outstanding alumni of SCUT). The experts and scholars with important influence in this field from home and abroad attended the conference, including Prof.Guanrong Chen (City University of Hong Kong, Editor-in-chief of International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos), Prof. Ka Sing Lau (Chinese University of Hong Kong, Head of Department of Mathematics), Prof. Zhihong Xia (Northwestern University, U.S. President Fund winner), Prof. Kening Lv (University of Michigan), Prof. Tao Tang (Hong Kong Baptist University, President of Hong Kong Mathematical Society), Prof. Zhiying Wen (Tsinghua University), Prof. Zhouping Xin (Chinese University of Hong Kong, Associate Director of Institute of Mathematics), Prof. Tong Yang (City University of Hong Kong, Associate Dean of College of Science and Engineering), Prof. Xiaoqiang Zhao (Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada), Prof. Xiangdong Ye (University of Science and Technology of China, Deputy secretary of the party committee, Vice President), Prof. Jianshe Geng (President of Guangzhou University), etc. In addition, nine winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and several leaders from National Natural Science Foundation of China were invited to attend the conference. There are more than 200 participants consisting of students, teachers and related experts and scholars.
The opening ceremony was presided by Professor Min Wu, Dean of School of Sciences. Prof. Xichun Zhang, Vice President of SCUT, congratulated and addressed the conference and expressed warm welcome on the arrival of the experts and scholars. He said that in recent years, the university attaches great importance to the development of mathematics and other basic subjects, increases the resources for basic subjects, and actively supports their development. Great progresses have been made in mathematics and other basic subjects. Very good results have been achieved in teaching and scientific research. These achievements are impossible without the support of the present experts and scholars. On behalf of SCUT, he expressed sincere thanks to the experts and scholars.
In the opening ceremony, Prof. Boling Guo introduced the important progresses on nonlinear analysis of the recent years and proposed several meaningful research directions. He also expressed high expectations to young scientific researchers and hoped that they can carry out practical problems with significant and valuable research work.
The three-day conference held a total of 11 plenary reports and 60 special reports with focus on questions of nonlinear partial differential equations and numerical analysis, nonlinear dynamic systems, theory and application of fractal geometry and other related fields.
The most prominent feature of nonlinear science is that it is a new interdisciplinary science. Because of its rich content and important role, it is highly valued by governments and academic institutions. Nonlinear mathematics is a core component of nonlinear science, in which the nonlinear partial differential equations, nonlinear dynamic systems and fractal geometry are extremely important in the current nonlinear science research field. This conference is the first communication chance for experts and scholars in nonlinear mathematics related fields. Prof. Boling Guo and other experts highly praised the successful holding of this conference.
