On February 22, 2021, the general office of the Ministry of Education announced the list of national and provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites in 2020. South China University of technology added 16 national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, including the business English major of the school of foreign languages. So far, the total number of national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites of SCUT has reached 40, accounting for 48% of the number of undergraduate specialties of the university.

The business English major of the school of foreign languages, formerly known as the English major, can be traced back to the foreign language research center established by SCUT in 1952 and the foreign language department established in 1985. It is one of the earliest departments in our university. Undergraduate students majoring in English major were enrolled in 1988 for the first time, and business English major was established in 2014.

       According to the professional ranking of Network of Science & Education Evaluation in China, this major ranked second in China for three consecutive years in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The employment rate of this major is firmly in the forefront of the University.

Business English major rely on the advantages of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and double first-class university, and carry out the construction of first-class undergraduate majors in accordance with the university spirit of upholding virtues and pursuing knowledge, constantly striving for self-improvement, pragmatic innovation and forever pursuit of excellence of South China University of Technology. This major provides the country with high-quality business English graduates who have both patriotic feelings and international vision, have the ability of international business communication in the new era, integrate the Chinese vision into international business communication, and innovate the concept, mode and style of international business communication.

The school of foreign languages will further strengthen the connotation construction of business English major, improve the professional quality assurance system, and comprehensively implement the first-class undergraduate education reform in accordance with the requirements of a series of documents such as the implementation plan for the audit and evaluation of undergraduate education and teaching in colleges and universities (2021-2025) and the national standard for the teaching quality of undergraduate majors in colleges and universities, continuously improve the quality of education.

It is reported that the Ministry of education will implement the double 10,000 plan for the construction of first-class undergraduate majors from April 2019, and will build about 10000 national first-class undergraduate majors and about 10000 provincial first-class undergraduate majors from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, the Ministry of education approved 3977 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites (including 1387 central tracks and 2590 local tracks), and 4448 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites.
