On March 7, Prof. HUANG Guowen, Chang Jiang Scholar, expert entitled to Government Special Allowance(GSA), editor in chief of journal Foreign Languages in China, and the dean and PhD supervisor from Sun Yat-sen University, lectured on “Scientific Research and Academic Publishing” in SFL. The lecture was attended by Prof. ZHONG Shu-neng, leader of SFL, together with the teaching staff and students.
Prof. LUO Shiping expressed the warm welcome to HUANG on behalf of SFL and introduced his academic achievements. HUANG started his lecture in a humorous way and then analyzed the common problems arising in academic writing from 6 aspects: why doing scientific research, personal development and scientific research, academic training and scientific research, characteristics of academic papers, and academic writing and academic publishing. According to him, the difficulty in writing and even publishing academic essays resulted from the lack of academic training. Besides, He shared with the audience his suggestions on conducting academic training and his experience of dealing with the unqualified papers as the editor of academic journals, during which he introduced the writing format, publishing procedure and online paper submission system. The lecture was concluded with his words “There is a light at the end of tunnel”, as he wished to encourage the audience to stick to academic writing and publishing regardless of any setbacks throughout the whole process.
In the Q & A section, HUANG provided detailed answers to the audience’s questions ranging from Matthew effect in scientific researches, danger of literature review to academic and vocational development of MTI students. In his view, the difference between MTI students and academic students is the same as that between engineering and sciences. Education of MTI is more like the training of a chef, which attaches importance to practice rather than theory.
The event was ended with LUO’s summary and comment. He spoke highly of HUANG’s academic achievements and his inspiring lecture. (By Dan Zhou and Lu Ming)
