On the afternoon of October 11, Professor Li Weiping, supervisor of doctorate students and Deputy Director of the Discipline Planning and Construction Office of Shanghai International Studies University, gave us an eye-opening lecture in the Conference Room 4503 of the School of Foreign Languages. His lecture was entitled Status Quo of Anglo-American Literary Criticism and Academic Research Strategy in China. The lecture was hosted by Professor Yan Xuejun. All the postgraduate students and their Supervisors of School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture.
Professor Li began with the Anglo-American literary studies in China in the 1990s, introducing the research achievements in four aspects, namely the literary history, schools of literature & literary genres, writers and their works, and literary theories. Then, Professor Li made a graphical analysis of the English and American Literature research trends in China. In the second part of the lecture, Professor Li focused on the academic research strategy. By using clear illustrations, he described the entire research process, and offered his advice on how to do research. He suggested five elements of a particular research, including the topic selection, layout, and argumentation and style standard. At the end of the lecture, Professor Li answered the questions raised by the students patiently.
The lecture lasted two hours. It provided us with a deeper understanding of the current situation of Anglo-American literary criticism in China and a clear guidance for our academic research.
