On the afternoon of May 25, Pro Xu Shenghuan, famous scholar in foreign languages and PhD supervisor of Henan University, visited School of Foreign Languages and gave an academic lecture “The methodology of mental philosophy and language research”. The lecture was hosted by Professor Zhong Shuneng of School of Foreign Languages.

Pro Xu started from the classical question of “how material generate s spirit” to describe the development of mental philosophy and its relationship with cognitive science and cognitive linguistics. What’s more, he took thinking, feeling nature and intention as three examples to show how to apple mental philosophy to the study of linguistics. After that, Pro Xu patiently answered the questions raised by teachers and students. The lecture ended in warm applause.

It is learnt that Professor Xu holds a concurrent post as PhD supervisor of Sichuan University, and has been PhD supervisor of Southwest University and GDUFS, distinguished professor of SCNU and CTGU, consultant of China Cognitive Linguistics Association, and China Pragmatics Association, member of Foreign Language Strategy Research Centre Academic Committee of Shanghai International Studies University. Professor Xu has published about 200 papers in Zhongguo Yuwen, China Information Processing Journal, Foreign Language Teaching and Research and other journals.(By Hanzhen Zhang)
