Through the unremitting efforts of our staffs in the past 60 years, significant improvement has been made on the major of automation in its curriculum system construction, teaching staff cultivation, teaching conditions, and the corresponding control science and engineering discipline. At presents, we have a First-Level Discipline Authorized to Offer Doctorate Degree (in control science and engineering), 4 Second-Level Disciplines Authorized to Offer Doctorate Degree (in control theory and control engineering, system engineering, pattern recognition and intelligent system, as well as detection technology and automatic equipment), 5 Second-Level Disciplines Authorized to Offer Master Degree (in control theory and control engineering, system engineering, pattern recognition and intelligent system, detection technology and automation equipment, as well as system analysis and integration), and a post-doctoral research station in control science and engineering. The control theory and control engineering discipline was selected as a Provincial Key Discipline of Guangdong. The famous academic journal Control Theory & Applications is also edited and published by the School.

The School possesses a team of high level teaching staffs. There are currently 95 staffs, including 16 professors, 22 associate professors, and 59 doctorate degree holders. There are also two jointly appointed academicians, one Yangtze River Scholar, one Pearl River scholar, and two lecturers achieved the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, All of these guarantees for the development of the discipline.

We have also paid much attention to the construction of the teaching and research bases for innovative practices. Several important bases have been set up, including the Electrical Information and Control Experimental training center, a Branch of National Experimental Training and Demonstration Center. Our Innovative Ability Augment Base in Automation for College Students is one of the 20 training bases in South China University of Technology (SCUT). The Automation Experimental Training centre is one of the ten experimental bases for undergraduates. The laboratories for the automation subjects include the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education in Precise Electronic Manufacturing Equipment, Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education in Independent System and Network Control, the Laboratory of Process System Integration, the Laboratory of Movement Control Based on Network, the Laboratory of Real-time Control Based on INTERNET and Field Bus, the Laboratory of Industrial Process Advanced Control Strategy Development, and the Laboratory of Intelligent Detection and Control Technology. The School also built three joint research laboratories with enterprises, which are SCUT-Mitsubishi Electric FA lab, SCUT-Beijing Wellincontrol Technology Development Co., Ltd joint development lab, and SCUT-Microchip Technology Inc. single chip joint development lab. Meanwhile, six off-campus practice bases have been established with related enterprises. These practice bases guarantee the engineering training of automation for all the students.

In the past 60 years, over 6400 students have graduated from the major of automation. Most of them have become backbone of enterprises and institutions. The employment rates of fresh graduates in the past three years stay higher than 97%. The major of automation in our school has become an irreplaceable and important high-end personnel training base in south China.
