Content: The concept of “smart City” was more or less promoted in the 90’s. Basically, it means enhancement of living standard through intensive use of advanced technology. The term “smart city” has become more and more popular among researchers in the fields of urban planning, urban studies, transport engineering, and computer science due to its multi-disciplinary nature. Most of the focus however concentrates on the application of technology and how this application can improve our living standard and urban sustainability. However, in this presentation, we would like to raise a small issue which is usually neglected in this discussion of smart city development, namely, can smart city make us, the people, smarter, healthier and more active in a non-technological aspect ? This presentation hopes to raise the discussion level in this aspect with a number of simple examples to examine if the development of smart city can somehow create any undesirable side effects that the advocates of smart city may not really want to see.
