His main field of research and work are the technology and ideology of the traditional buildings and vernacular settlements. He is director of a NSFC project for the survey of the traditional craftsperson in vernacular settlements from 2004. He has also been responsible of several historic preservation projects in South China area, which involve historic Conservation planning and historic building restoration. He developed over 10 years of experiences in field work of vernacular settlement research in South China villages.

He worked as one of the partners of the architect, Dr. Wu Qingzhou in the project Conservation of the Zhaoxiang Huang Ancestral Hall in China, which got the honorable mention of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific awards for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2005.
