Recently, the list of winners of the 2025 Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award was officially announced. Professor Tan Mingkui from the School of Software Engineering, South China University of Technology, was awarded the First Prize of Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Natural Science Award for his outstanding achievements in the field of artificial intelligence basic theories and algorithms, marking a major breakthrough for our school in this important award.



The Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award is the highest-level scientific and technological award in the field of artificial intelligence in China, and the First Prize of Natural Science represents the top level of basic research on artificial intelligence in the country.
Professor Tan Mingkui has long been engaged in research on cutting-edge directions such as machine learning, deep learning and pattern recognition, and has made a series of important breakthroughs in the innovation of artificial intelligence basic theories and algorithms. His research results have been published in top international journals and conferences including NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR and IEEE TPAMI. He has presided over a number of major national and provincial-level projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Key R&D Program of Guangdong Province for the New Generation of Artificial Intelligence. He has successively won important honors such as the Second Prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Science and Technology Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, and the Best Paper Award of the World Association of Chinese Mathematicians, and has been selected into Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists List for many consecutive years.
Winning the First Prize of Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Natural Science Award this time is not only an important achievement of Professor Tan Mingkui's team after dedicated research and overcoming difficulties, but also a landmark breakthrough for our school in the disciplinary construction, basic research and original innovation capacity of artificial intelligence. Taking this opportunity, the school will continue to focus on the major strategic needs of the country, deepen basic research and original innovation, continuously enhance the core competitiveness of the discipline, and make greater contributions to promoting the high-quality development of artificial intelligence in China.
