Jian Chen is currently a professor of the School of Software Engineering (SSE) at South China University of Technology, China. She started as an a professor in SSE at South China University of Technology in 2013.

She received her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Computer Science, from Sun Yat-Sen University, China, in 2000 and 2005 respectively. Her research interests can be summarized as developing effective and efficient data analysis techniques for complex data and the related applications. Particularly, she is currently interested in various techniques of data mining, Web search, information retrieval, recommendation techniques as well as their applications in social networks, business and bioinformatics. Her research has been supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province (China), the Natural Science Key Program of Higher Education Institutions of Guangdong Province, the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities (SCUT) and Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), etc.

Since 2000, he has published 40 research papers in refereed journals and conferences, has served in the organization committees and the program committees of over 20 international conferences and workshops, and has been a reviewer for the leading academic journals in his fields. She has served a PC member of SDM2013, PAKDD 2009-2013, DASFFA2013, CIKM 2009-2013, ADMA2009-2013, etc.
