Triumph at CCAVA: Our School Shines at the 24th Conference

From October 26th to 27th, the 24th Annual Conference of the Chinese Collegial Association for Visual Art (CCAVA) and the 17th Chinese Advanced Forum of Visual Art convened at Liaoning University. Over 700 experts and scholars from universities nationwide gathered to explore the theme “New Era, New Mission: Chinese Film and Television and the Construction of Modern Chinese National Civilization.” They examined how Chinese film and television can foster cultural prosperity, advance the building of a strong cultural nation at this new juncture, and contribute to the modern civilization of the Chinese nation.


Outstanding Achievements

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Internet Audiovisual Production and Research Center of the School of Journalism and Communication at South China University of Technology (SCUT) provided valuable support to CCAVA’s 2023–2024 Annual Academic Paper and Film & Television Work Promotion Activity, as well as the 17th “Academic Award” and the 14th “Academy Award.” In recognition of these efforts, the Center received the title of “Outstanding Organization Unit.”

· Professor Zhang Buzhong won the third prize in the 17th “Academic Award” (academic paper category) for his paper titled:“The Literary Imaging of the ‘Warm Era’—On the Adaptation and Creation of the TV Series ‘The Road of Life’.”

· Associate Professor Zhang Lu Yuan also secured third prize in the same category for the paper:“The Technological Empowerment, Media Characteristics, and Cultural Crisis of Artificial Intelligence Imaging Production Models.”

In the 14th “Academy Award,” SCUT students garnered exceptional honors:

· “My Dear, I Want to Age Gracefully” by Xie Xinlei, Zheng Kexin, and Liu Jiachi won first prize in the documentary category (student group).

· “Joy” by Yu Rong, Li Mingying, and Wu Bingxiao received second prize in the documentary category (student group).

· “Blank Space” by Chen Qiaoli, Zhang Yuhan, and Deng Yecheng won second prize in the short video and micro-drama category (student group).


Conference Highlights

At the opening ceremony, the following leaders and scholars delivered addresses:

· Professor Yu Miaojie, Deputy Secretary and President of Liaoning University

· Tian Jin, Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Radio and Television Social Organizations and former Deputy Director of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television

· Zhu Wenbiao, Deputy Director of the Liaoning Radio and Television Bureau

· Researcher Ding Yaping, President of CCAVA and the Chinese National Academy of Arts

During the thematic forum, notable participants included:

· Professor Meng Jian, National Center for Cultural Innovation, Fudan University

· Professor Yin Hong, School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University; Vice Chairman of the China Film Association and the China Literature and Art Critics Association

· Researcher Jia Leilei, former Vice President of the Chinese National Academy of Arts and President of the Nanhai Art and Science College at Haikou University of Economics

· Director Gao Changli, Television Drama Department of the National Radio and Television Administration

· Professor Hu Zhifeng, Vice Chairman of the China Television Artists Association and the School of Arts and Media, Beijing Normal University

· Mr. Takeuchi Ryo, Japanese documentary director and part-time instructor at the Northeast Asia Audiovisual Art Creation and Research Center, Liaoning University

The forum was chaired by Professor Chen Xuguang from the School of Arts, Peking University, and featured in-depth discussions on how to build a modern cultural civilization through film and television.


Special Forums

Two special forums—“The Current State of Network Audiovisual Development” and “Overseas Dissemination of Film and Television Works”—highlighted cutting-edge research and practice:


· Associate Professor Chen Xi, School of Journalism and Communication at SCUT, delivered a keynote titled:“The Mechanism of Transmission Power Transformation in Network Platform Content Production, User Practice, and Emotional Flow Change.”Using the transformation of the “City Hide and Seek” game from UGC (user-generated content) to a nation-wide phenomenon and ultimately a reality show, Chen Xi explored how social affordances and physical participation act as key drivers in cross-media content production and dissemination.


· Associate Professor Zhang Lu Yuan, also from SCUT, discussed:“Exploration of Models, Analysis of Barriers, and Effectiveness Improvement in the International Dissemination of Chinese Network Micro-Short Dramas.”She noted that Chinese micro-short dramas are increasingly reaching global audiences, gaining favor for their innovative themes, concise plots, and brisk pacing. Zhang highlighted the need for multifaceted strategies—strengthening market structures, improving content quality, expanding overseas channels, and employing precise targeting—to further enhance international dissemination.


Looking Ahead

According to conference organizers, this annual gathering served as a high-standard platform for exchange and exhibition, including 242 conference papers, 27 academic forums, 307 film and television entries evaluated in the final round of the promotional activity, covering drama, documentary, animation and digital media, short video and micro-short drama, and sound works.

With an ever-growing scope and caliber, the conference continues to foster vibrant dialogue and innovation in China’s film, television, and audiovisual sectors.
