Recently, the first national college students film and television graduation work joint exhibition series were hosted by the China University Film and Television Association at Haikou University of Economics. Professionals and academics from numerous prestigious universities convened to witness the visual feast. Two prizes were given to students from School of Journalism and Communication of South China University of Technology: one for excellent dramatization and the other for documentary shortlisted works.
Over 240 graduation works, comprising 3 different kinds of feature films, documentaries, and cartoons, were received for the exhibition, which had as its theme “convergence, openness, discussion, and joint progress” from more than 100 colleges. It compiled the outstanding accomplishments of film and television practice teaching, as well as the creative visual concepts of contemporary youth.
The student submissions from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Network Audiovisual Creation and Research Center stood out among the many excellent pieces. “Hurige”, created by Ren Aoqing in the communication department of class of 2022, won the Outstanding Drama Award. And “Thomas and His Friends”, created by Yi Yukai in the communication department of class of 2023, became the documentary shortlisted work.
“Hurige” chronicles Wang Xiue’s hunt for Zhang Demin, the driver who killed her daughter and fled. The work combines empirical and subjective reality, creates a polysemy of bizarre colors, and expands the space for multiple interpretations with a restrained artistic approach. “Thomas and His Friends” get its start in youth volunteer activities. It takes the family of the autistic child Zhou Guihao as the protagonist, and depicts his growth process as well as the behind-the-scenes tale of how he organizes his personal painting show.
Associate Professor Zhang Luyuan reported on the pertinent work of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Network Audiovisual Creation and Research Center since its establishment and offered suggestions fort he development of the innovation and research center as well as the joint exhibition of film and television graduation works at the exchange meeting of the Professional Committee of China University Film and Television Association, the Innovation and Research Center, and the Joint Exhibition of Film and Television Graduation Works of College Students.
The exhibition compiled graduation works in the film and television industries from numerous universities. Participants shared opinions and ideas through public screenings and academic seminars. All these facilitated the mutual advancement of theory and practice as well as creation and research, which will advance the prosperity and professional growth of the film and television industries as well as the education sector.
