On May 13rd, Interdisplinary academic conference“Big Data, Science and Technology, the Future of Media” was hosted by School of Journalism and Communication, School of Computer Science and Engineering and the institution of Chinese Journalism History. Professor Shen Hao from School of journalism of Communication University of China noted that it was an exciting big data era when software can define media, data can drive journalism, calculation can rebuild channel. We are also a part of the big data.

Scholars from famous universities both at home and abroad, related industry practitioners and graduate students and doctoral students from several universities made joint discussion on development of Journalism and communication under the big data background in the new era and cross-field exchanges and cooperation among different disciplines. Principal assistant Wu Yechun from SCUT welcomed guests in the speech, hoping that further integration between disciplines can be made, academic research can better serve the society and promote the overall progress of industry and society.

Professor Yao Jianquan, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences commenced keynote speech with his written speech “A New Revolution in Science and Technology and Our Opportunities”. He stated that the significance of cross-field research lied in its construction of communication between science, technology and social progress, which is very important for social development and national prosperity in the current information society environment. Historically, every progress in human society was resulted from new technology-driven industrial revolution, triggering a major change in government management and social governance.

Professor He Daokuan, from School of Journalism and Communication of Shenzhen University made the keynote speech on “Media Environment: From Edge to Palace” targeting at thehistorical development of media environment. He introduced the winding development of media environment by narrating the master in communication and their work he translated. He also acknowledged the situation where media environment become centralized.

Professor Zhang Jun, from School of Computer Science and Engineering of SCUT, regarded big data as “Ness monster”. According to his speech “Big data - Internet of Things - Cloud Computing: Recent Advances in Computational Intelligence”. He explained the vital meaning of developing big data from the perspective of computer development. In addition,behind the rapid development of big data, is the development of Internet of things and new computing model.

Professor Shen Hao, from School of Journalism, Communication University of China,said that “ If we get more than 20 Weibo information from an English-user’s , they will be classified into more than ten tags after being put into a data processor. Afterward, the user’s favorite, feature and potential behavior will be shown when the classification was placed in a translator-like process. The data science enable us to see people’s behavior. Nowadays, all of us are a part of big data. Discovering the knowledge, finding the module, tendency and relevance behind the big data, unveiling the social development discipline will be connected with the data-based technology.

Professor Huang Yu from School of Communication,HKBU made a proposition that The integration of data and media has become an international trend in the recent ten years. He also introduced the complex talents nutrition in HKBU where the journalism faculty cooperates with computer faculty to set up communication degree: Data and Media Communication Major.

Executive Vice Secretary-General of Public opinion monitoring room of People’s Network Shan Xuegang explained his view big data assists media convergence communicationthrough the reconstruction of content production process, rebuilding the user ecosystem, reshaping newmediabusiness model. He added that it’s necessary to build a fusion platform driven by advanced technology to reform the media, thus achieving three-dimensional communication. At the policy level, to seize the main battlefield of public opinion, the mainstream media should issue the voice.At the market level, optimize the means of communication, cover multi screen, rebuild user connections.At the operational level, reshaping the business model to achieve sustainable development.

SCUT outstanding alumni, a co-founder of Umiplus, president Li Zhankeng shared the practical experience of the new media matrix with60 million fans in the Science and Technology Communication Culture speech. He summed up how did the technical type Umiplus conduct Internet Marketing in the era of big data: accurate delivery through data integration. And he put forward their own observations on content entrepreneurship.

The school of Journalism and communication information and communication technology under the background of the future as the theme of the forum is to bring 6 deans of school of Journalism and communication from Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, School of Journalism and Communication College of Hong Kong Baptist University made a wonderful and warm discussion at the dean forumJournalism and Communication Discipline Outlook In the Context of Information and Communication Technology .

On the afternoon of the same day, panel discussions of new media industries and academic journals as well as 6 parallel sub forums were held. People respectively discussed media formats under the new technological environment, data, algorithms and news perspectives, media convergence and brand innovation, information control and data reflection,digital age, future citizens and new media literacy, cultural interpretation of the era of big data.
