He initiated data news for caixin.com in June 2013 and visualization Laboratory of data in October. Nowadays, he creates a data factory and acts as CEO, leading his team to harvest more than ten domestic and foreign data news awards. On April 7th, he was invited to the school of Journalism and communication as the outstanding alumni from School of Materials Science and Engineering of SCUT, and gave a speech about “The Analysis of Basis and Case of Data News”, share the forefront concept and practical experience of data news and with theteachers and students from the perspective of news journalists and practitioners.

Caixin famous work “Zhou Yongkang's people and wealth” was finished under the leadership of Huang Zhimin, which pushed Caixin to the benchmark position of domestic data network news. Taking Zhou’s case for example, Huang Zhimin made a detailed analysis of its production and process. He refined 7 steps of data news production: finding the topic, looking for the angle, sorting data , analyzing data , selecting the appropriate graphics, data processing and graphical rendering with the code. In addition, he showed the form of the data news by demonstrating “Spy in the Sky” of BUZZFEED. He said, “the complete data news should include two aspects of data-driven and visualization, one is to dig the story, and the other is to use the graph to tell the story.

Data news can not be separated from data visualization. “What should we learn from datavisualization is to combine content, data, technology and art.” Huang Zhimin believed that even if we were not engaged in the news media , the ability is also needed in all walks of work. At the same time we should learn to appreciate the data visualization and avoid complicated miscellaneous.

2013 can be said to be the first year of China's data news, when the Data News Manual was introduced to China, Baidu developed Echarts, data news workshop was established. The history of the data journalism is not long, but in recent years it quickly attracts people’s attention. Big data≠data visualization, data news≠news data, H5≠data news, For this kind of easy to produce misunderstanding, Huang Zhimin explained in detailed about the above misunderstanding.

“Big data is really overused, but it is not a simple statistics. Neither should we underestimate it, nor should we overestimate it.” At the end of the lecture, Huang had an interaction with the students, proposing some issues on idea, technology and operation. She also concluded that all complicated works are based on small thing. In terms of the use of the data, it’s determined by the data constitution which is an important thing in the education of data journalism.

After being interviewed by two students from Columbia University, Huang Zhimin attached great importance to data journalism and made an introduction of its learning method. It is necessary for the students majoring in art to learn programming because it is a kind of logical thinking without too much difficulty. Even if the art major students can’t engage in programming, they ought to master the open source software.
