Established on July 16th, 2004, School of Journalist and Communication (SJC) has been having a rapid development. SCJ has taken up the vantage point by making the best use of economic superiority, information superiority, resource superiority and geographical advantage of Guangdong province and hiked frontier of Studies on Radio and Television and Disciplines Development of New Media. The experimental teaching center (hereinafter referred to as “center”) was established in November of 2005. Relying on the rich resource of SCUT curricula such as science, technology, engineering, literature, law, economics, management and arts, this center becomes the SCJ secondary institution which serves for both Experiment Teaching and Laboratory Management. All the undergraduates and postgraduates of SCJ are allowed to do Experiment Teaching Open Test and Laboratory Management in this center.
This center aims to cultivate professionals who are equipped with Lingnan culture, provided with the knowledge of science and technology, possessed of cultural literacy and good at the application of media technology. The motto of this center is “School-based, Guangzhou-oriented, to expand in the whole South China, aiming for resource- sharing”. SCJ has been striving and struggling to make this center first-rate experimental teaching platform of Application of Digital Communication Technologies.
Through 4 years’ efforts, the center has established 6 labs in Building B9 and B7 of south campus, including Photography Lab, AVID Pinnacle Non-linear Editing Lab, TV Recording Studio, Audio-visual Element Analysis Lab (including Satellite TV Reception Lab), Network New Media Innovation Practice Base, Advertising Photography Lab (including professional studio). The total area is 920㎡, total investment is 8,000,000 RMB. The experimental teaching center of journalism and communication has integrated the basic or innovative experimental teaching center with the research base of production, teaching, and research of Radio and TV.I
In these 4 years, we also have cultivated an experienced teaching staff, including 3 full-time teachers and 22 part-time teachers, of whom 13 are with senior title, 7 have Doctor’s Degree.
The Teaching Laboratory of the center focuses on the experimental teaching for 4 undergraduates’ majors (Communication, Advertising, Editing and Publishing, Digital Media Arts). From October of 2005, it offers 12 experimental courses for 880 undergraduates from the following 3 majors: Communication, Advertising, Editing and Publishing. It also has 69 program pilot projects, 85.5% of which are comprehensive projects and designing projects, undertaking 53328 man-hours’ experimental teaching. This center also undertakes the practice and experimental teaching for students who study as a minor or for second bachelor’s degree. It has done a series of educational reform and research, and 5 projects of experimental teaching reform are approved by SCUT.
This center is also the base for extra-curricular scientific activities such as National Undergraduate Business Plan Competition, innovative research, etc. It provides experimental conditions for 104 Student Research Program (SRP). The entries supervised by teachers of this center have gotten 7 awards, of which 4 are national-level, and 3 are provincial-level.
After about four years’ construction, this center forms the following characteristics of experimental teaching, that is, based on the classic theory of Communication, aiming at professional media services, enterprises and relevant governmental departments, focusing on exploring new media communication channels and new mode and new technology of media, and researching on the new model of teaching and experiment of video communication and brand communication. This center aims at making theoretical and practical contributions to the development of classical theory of Communication and the integration of new and old media.
The experimental teaching center of SJC has great impact on similar disciplines of other Chinese universities. It forms a unique teaching characteristic, and actively promotes the reform of the experimental teaching of Journalism and Communication in South China.
