“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors; and the most patient of teachers.” C.W. Eliot showed us the importance and usefulness of a book. The same can be said about traditional dictionaries. Nowadays, with the fast development of technology, electronic dictionaries have become more and more popular. In spite of the super convenience of using electronic dictionaries, I believe that traditional dictionaries should not be killed by the electronic dictionaries because they have something special that can not be easily replaced.
First of all, traditional dictionaries are more accurate and detailed than electronic ones. When you check a new word through an electronic dictionary, you will just get the meaning you want and be less likely to read its other different meanings. Instead, when you look it up in the traditional dictionary, you will be motivated by the accurate and detailed information of that word and thus more likely to accumulate more. In other word, traditional dictionaries are more helpful with our study.
Secondly, traditional dictionaries are cheaper and more durable than electronic dictionaries. The price of a traditional dictionary is much cheaper than an electronic one. Not all family can afford an expensive electronic product. Moreover, an electronic one has to change batteries very often and can be broken easily. Batteries and the repair need more money. However, if you are using a traditional one, you don’t need to worry about such stuff at all. Just take good care of your dictionary, and it will be there for you forever.
Last but not least, just like an e-book can never replace a true book, the electronic things can not easily replace anything that’s real, either. When you read a book or look up a dictionary and turn the pages one by one, the feeling of it is so special that you will probably never want to use any electronic things.
As mentioned above, traditional dictionaries are too important to be killed. If you want to learn more, if you want to save money and if you want to enjoy the feeling of reading a book, please use your traditional dictionaries a lot!
