On April 30th, the school held a welcome ceremony for Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. School leaders including Ji Fei, Secretary of the Party Committee, Xue Quan, Dean, and Zhang Xiuyin, Executive Vice Dean, as well as faculty representatives attended the ceremony.
Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mathematical Physics from the University of Kent (UK) in 1982 and PhD in Electronics from the same university in 1987. He joined Loughborough University (UK) as a faculty member in 1988, and served as Dean of the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering from 2006 to 2012. He joins the School of Microelectronics at South China University of Technology as Academic Dean from May 2025. His research focuses on metamaterial structures and additive manufacturing (3D printing) technologies for RF/microwave/millimeter-wave engineering. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers (cited over 12,000 times) and authored a monograph on frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Life FIEEE).
Dean Xue Quan extended a warm welcome to Academician Yiannis Vardaxoglou for joining the school. He noted that Professor Yiannis is an internationally renowned expert in wireless communications, having founded the 36-year-old Wireless Communications Research Group (WiCR) and established the Centre for Mobile Communications Research (CMCR) at Loughborough University. The team he led had conducted extensive research and achieved remarkable achievements in cutting-edge wireless communication technologies. Yiannis' joining marks a significant milestone in the school's talent recruitment strategy, and his academic expertise and industrial experience will help the school accelerate breakthroughs in bottleneck technical challenges. The school is committed to a talent-first strategy, provide exclusive services for outstanding talents like academic fellows, and accelerate the cultivation of globally competitive achievements by building a fertile collaborating platform of Academician Leadership - Team building– Industry involvement and feedback.
Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou expressed his pleasure in joining the school, noting that during his recruitment process, he deeply felt the professionalism and hard work of the school's staff and their warmth in daily life. He was inspired by the vigorous development of China's integrated circuit industry and the innovative vitality of the newly built international campus and the School of Microelectronics. In the future, he will fully leverage his professional expertise, explore and innovate together with all faculty members, and promote further improvements in the school's research capabilities and talent team building and recruitment.
Special Lecture
On May 14th, Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou delivered a special lecture titled A Snapshot of Research Spanning Over 40 Years at Room B1c-101 of the Guangzhou International Campus. The lecture was chaired by Dean Xue Quan, with faculty representatives in attendance.
Before the lecture, Dean Xue Quan briefly introduced Yiannis' academic background and research achievements to the faculty and expressed gratitude for his willingness to deliver the lecture. During the lecture, Yiannis focused on sharing the educational and research achievements from his academic career at Loughborough University, presenting detailed and comprehensive content. After the presentation, faculty members actively asked questions and engaged in fruitful discussions.
The lecture enabled faculty members to gain a detailed and comprehensive understanding of Professor Yiannis' academic journey and research accomplishments, facilitating future academic collaborations and promoting the improvement of the school's overall research standards.
