On the morning of September 7^th, 437 undergraduate freshmen and 513 graduate students of Grade 2018 from the School of Materials Science and Engineering gathered in SCUT. A grand opening ceremony for the 2018 new comers was held at the International Conference Hall of Liwu Science and Technology Building on Wushan Campus.

Leaders, department heads, freshmen class advisers and outstanding alumni attended the ceremony, including Qinyuan Zhang, Secretary of the CPC of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Junbiao Peng, Dean of the School, Yaogen Wu, chairman of Foshan JinHui Hi-Tech Optoelectronic Materials Co., Ltd., Yingbin Xu, chairman of Guangzhou KeYuan Innovative Materials Co., Ltd., Xianping Sun, chairman of Guangzhou Longsun Technology Co., Ltd., Zhiliang Wang, chairman of FCRI Group Co., Ltd. and others. Miaoxian Wu, Executive Secretary of the CPC of the School presided over the opening ceremony.

Junbiao Peng, Dean of the School, warmly welcomed the arrival of the new students in his welcome speech. He introduced in details to the freshmen about the strong faculty strength, excellent research conditions, solid discipline foundation and abundant international teaching resources of the School. It is hoped that the excellent school-running conditions would allow students to receive good scientific research training and open up their international vision. The caring team of faculty members and administrative staff will also accompany them throughout their stay here. In the end, he wished the new students a bright future in the School.

Yaogen Wu, outstanding alumnus of Grade 1977 and chairman of Foshan JinHui Hi-Tech Optoelectronic Materials Co., Ltd., shared with the freshmen the hardships and hard work of his time in SCUT, and encouraged the students to cherish their university life and develop themselves in an all-round way.

The School leaders and alumni representatives presented scholarships to outstanding students and teachers, including Alumnus Yaogen Wu Scholarship, Longsun Scholarship, FCRI Scholarship, KeYuan Scholarship and ShengYi Scholarship. The signing ceremony of Longsun Scholarship and FCRI Scholarship was held afterwards.

At the end of the ceremony, He Jie, curator of the Innovative Materials Museum, introduced the progress of the application of new materials in industry, expanding freshmen’s understanding of the field of new materials.

In order to enhance the awareness of laboratory safety, Weiwen Fu, Executive Director of the Experimental Center of the School, and Zhonghao Huang, Director of Guangdong Guanghua Sci-Tech Co., Ltd., gave a laboratory safety training course to the freshmen after the opening ceremony.

After the opening ceremony, in order to create a strong sense of belonging, the 2018 freshmen came to the large lawn in front of the Liwu Building, and arranged into the formation of the School’s logo under the guidance of the staff. The unmanned aerial vehicle captured this spectacular picture. Gathering talented people from all over the world, and showing the spirit of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. This is the logo for confident and proud SMSErs, and also the endorsement badge for freshmen.
