On 26th May, 30 entries from SCUT entered the finals in the 15th Guangdong Challenge Cup, 22 of which won top prizes, marking a new record of the university. In addition, 8 final entries won at least a second prize. SCUT won the Cup with the highest overall group score. The three final entries of SMSE all got top prizes, accounting for one tenth of all prizes and one seventh of all top prizes of SCUT! The three works included two categories: scientific and technological invention and natural science academic papers, covering the field of information technology and energy chemical engineering. The three top prizes were shared by more than 20 students, including both undergraduates and postgraduates, which fully reflected the great achievements in training students’ scientific and technological innovative ability in SMSE.

The opening ceremony of the final was held in Foshan University in the morning of 25th. Guangjun Zhang, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, attended the ceremony and gave a speech. The ceremony was also attended by Zhixiong Chi, Secretary of the League Provincial Party Committee, Kenan Qiu, Deputy Inspector of Provincial Education Department, Dihua He, Deputy Inspector of Provincial Science and Technology Department, Huanquan Wu, Vice Chairman of Provincial Association of Science and Technology, Yiting Wu, Deputy Secretary of the League Provincial Party Committee, Mingsheng Liang, Chairman of Provincial Union of Schools, Ping Tan, Vice Mayor of Foshan Municipal People's Government and more than 3000 teachers and students from 116 schools in Guangdong.

During the competition, Li Zheng, Vice Principal of SCUT, visited the exhibition area of the university and talked with students and instructors, encouraging the participants to find their potential, explore the edge of knowledge, dare to take the lead and have a try. He hoped that they could show the spirit of taking challenge of SCUTers with a solid foundation of knowledge and a rigorous attitude.

With the theme “Three decades of Challenge Cup. In the pursuit of dreams in a new era”, the competition attracted 2,627 works from 137 universities all over the province. After a careful and strict selection from experts and scholars in different fields, 751 works from 116 universities were chose to the final. The entries covered 11 fields of 3 categories, including natural science, philosophy and social science, scientific and technological inventions. Not only the coverage of participation, but also the quality of entries as well as the intensity of contest have been significantly enhanced compared with the previous competitions.

After the provincial competition, some awarded works will be selected by the university for promotion and submitted to the 16th National Challenge Cup. Wonderful materials lead to a bright future. Challengers from SMSE, SCUT will continue to work hard and forge ahead, fulfilling their vows to follow the national dream and keep pace with the development of the time with their unremitting efforts.
