What should we do when sulfuric acid spills, abandoned chemicals leaks or experimental installation were on fire? On 23rd December, the drilling of dealing with laboratory accidents ran in Building 25 of our school. Present at the drilling were Vice-president Zhi Dang, the administrators of Lab & Facility Management Division and Science & Technology Division, the head of materials school. Hundreds of students also watched and learned the whole process through the way of live online.
This drill consisted of dumping and spilling of sulfuric acid, leaking of abandoned chemicals, fire breaking out of experimental facilities and medical assistance of injured. In the first phase, students were taught to wash eyes with professional machines and clear the remaining sulfuric acid on the desk after spilling. In the second, students learned to wash as soon as possible using emergency shower facility when slipping caused by the leaking of abandoned chemicals. The third phase was about battling the fire. After firing in the laboratory, students were trained to use the fire extinguisher and call the fire police. Then the Red Cross helped to give the first aid treatment.
It was the first drill of dealing with the laboratory hazardous chemicals leakage in SCUT. Through training and practicing, this drill aims to impart lab safety knowledge, strength self-safety awareness and teach correct emergency treasures to help teachers and students to improve capabilities of self-rescue and supporting each other.
