Abstract:
This course will discuss various physical chemistry aspects of materials especially at the nanoscale regime. Topics include nucleation theory, crystal growth, principles of characterization methods, as well as phenomena of nano-bio interface and surface chemistry of nanomaterials.
Biography:
Prof. Dr. Chen’s research is aimed at the development of novel cost-effective nanomaterials to address critical problems in a variety of applications. Specifically, her research centers on the development of new methods for the synthesis of novel bimetallic nanostructures and metal-containing composite materials, with an ultimate goal to establish the structure-property relationships of functional nanomaterials for energy conversion, tribology, and nanomedicine. The experimental results from this research not only validate the predictions in literature, but also provide new insights for refining the theory and mechanistic understanding. She published a total of 80 peer-reviewed papers and was named top 1% most cited chemist in 2015 and 2016. She was a recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award (2011); Robert C. and Sandra Connor Endowed Faculty Fellowship at UA (2012); and Women’s Giving Circle Award at UA (2014). Her research is supported by a total of ~0.5 million funds from National Science Foundation and ~0.2 million funds from the State of Arkansas.
