From 8th to 12th February, the China-US Bilateral Workshop on Photonic Materials and Cancer Nanotechnology was held at State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, South China University of Technology (SCUT), under the sponsorships from the State Key Lab, School of Materials Science and Engineering and International Office of SCUT. It was sponsored by SCUT, and co-organized by Sun Yat-sen University, South China Agricultural University, Guangdong University of Technology and Guangzhou Military Hospital.

Various aspects had been covered in the Workshop, including the early detection of cancer, treatment of cancer, cancer targets and delivery, cancer nanotechnology, and the application of luminescence in biomedical fields like bioimaging, photodynamic therapy, etc. The Workshop aimed at promoting interdisciplinary cooperation between luminescence, oncology and materials science.

21 oral presentations had been given in this Workshop. 58 representatives from University of Texas, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Shaanxi Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine, Tianjin Medical University, and Guangzhou Military Hospital participated in the meeting, with Professor Wei Chen from University of Texas and Professor Mingying Peng from SCUT as the Chairs of the Workshop. Professor Chen hosted the opening ceremony, and Professor Junbiao Peng, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering gave an opening address, expressing warmly welcome and heartfelt thanks to the audience, as well as his best wishes for the complete success of this meeting. 21 scholars gave the oral reports, including Prof. Wei Chen from Texas University, Prof. Jianhua Hao from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Qiang Cai from Tsinghua, Prof. Xiaofeng Chen from SCUT, Prof. Yingliang Liu from South China Agricultural University, Prof. Jing Wang from Sun Yat-sen University, Prof. Weijun Xuan from Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine, and Prof. Rongxin Zhang from Tianjin Medical University. Scholars like Prof. Haoshuang Gu from Hubei University and Prof. Yihua Hu from Guangdong University of Technology hosted the parallel sessions. The talks fully displayed the latest research frontiers and indicated future research directions on cancer treatment mechanism, cancer photodynamic therapy, cerebral trauma treatment, luminescent materials design, nano-biotechnology, and medical equipments.

The success of the Workshop expands the influence of SCUT across the world and promotes communication between different international research institutes. Therefore, it is beneficial for the research of biomedical photonic materials in the State Key Lab of Luminescent Materials and Devices.
