On Jan 7, Eric V. Anslyn, Norman Hackerman Professor of Chemistry from University of Texas at Austin, Manuscript Associate Editor of Journal of the American Chemical Society, and TANG Benzhong, Chair Professor of Chemistry, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited SCUT. Vice-president ZHU Min, and Division Chief of the Personnel Department YU Qijun, met the guests at the reception room of Liwu Building.
At the meeting, Professor Zhu expressed a warm welcome to the guests, and introduced the history and school-running characteristics of SCUT. He extended the hope that both of the parties could have more academic exchanges and joint research in common disciplines. Professor Anslyn expressed his appreciation for ZHU’s hospitality, and his interests in further cooperation.
After the meeting, an academic symposium was held in Shaw Building of Humanities. Professor Anslyn delivered a lecture entitled “Supramolecular Methods for Rapid Enantiomeric Excess Determination”. Students and Staff member from the School of Materials Science and Engineering exchanged ideas with Prof. Anslyn on the report and academic research.
Professor Anslyn is one of the top scientists in the world in the field of glow chemistry. His research encompasses physical organic and bioorganic chemistry, and his research generally explores the use of synthetic receptors for sensing and catalysis applications. Professor Anslyn earned a B. S. in chemistry from the California State University, received his Ph.D in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1987, both with very impressive academic results. After a two-year stay at Columbia University as a National Science Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. In 2004 he was awarded the Norman Hackerman Professorship in Chemistry. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer of two companies, Reveal Sciences and Beacon Sciences.
