On Oct 18, Sir R. Friend, an academician of The Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering, and professor from Cavendish Laboratory was offered appointment as honorary professor of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. The appointment ceremony and academic symposium were held in Shaw Building of Humanities. ZHU Min, vice-president of SCUT, attended the ceremony and issued letter of appointment to him.

 
After the ceremony, Prof. Friend delivered a lecture entitled Electrons, holes and excitons at organic semiconductor heterojunctions.
 
It is reported that Prof. Friend is one of the pioneers in the brand new field of physics and engineering in carbon-based semiconductor devices, as well as the inventor of PLED. He was conferred knighthood by The Queen in 2003 for his significant contribution in physics, and was awarded Millennium Technology Prize in 2010.
