On April 2nd, the official website of The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) (www.most.gov.cn) released the list of the State Key Laboratories (SKL) to be constructed, which amount to 49, including the SKL of Physical & Chemical Luminescence to be constructed in SCUT. Apart from 2 SKLs, 4 State Engineering (Technology) Research Centers, and 3 National Engineering Laboratories (jointly built with enterprises), SCUT is setting up a new platform for scientific and technological innovation. To date, SCUT has 10 national research institutions, ranking the top in Guangdong universities and in the forefront of universities nationwide.

The SKL of Physical & Chemical Luminescence is to be set up to meet the specific requirements of the emerging industries of strategic importance like photoelectric information, light-emitting display, fibre-optical communication and sensing, energy-saving illumination in the energy sector, centering on the crucial scientific problems on the process of luminescence kinetics, luminescent and photovoltaic materials and devices, to conduct basic and applied basic research on physical and chemical luminescence. The SKL will be operated by an outstanding team in scientific research including 1 fellow of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 winners of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 2 Yangtze River scholars.
