Inan effort to further implement the fundamental mission of fostering virtuethrough education, enhance the quality of talent cultivation, and promote astrong culture of teaching and learning, the School of Law at SouthChina University of Technology (SCUT) held the LaunchingCeremony of the Academic Atmosphere Enhancement Year &All-Faculty-and-Student Assembly on April 25, 2024,at the Academic Lecture Hall on the University Town Campus.

Attendees included Mr. LiJun, Chairman of Guangzhou Juesheng Industrial Group Co., Ltd.;Mr. Fang Yun, Director of Guangdong Mingsi Law Firm; Professor Deng Xuexiong,Teaching Supervisor of the Law School; Professor Jiang Wuzhen, Dean of the LawSchool; Vice Deans Professor Zhang Youhao, Professor Xie Huijia and ProfessorXu Shu; Associate Party Secretary Wei Ping; as well as all faculty members,postgraduate and undergraduate students of the school, totaling around 1,000participants. The assembly was presided over by Chen Xiaoping, Secretary of theParty Committee of the Law School.

Dean Jiang Wuzhen delivered amobilization speech focusing on building a first-class academic and teachingatmosphere. He pointed out that a first-class discipline can never beestablished, nor can first-class talents be cultivated, without a first-classacademic and teaching environment. He emphasized that a sound academic andteaching atmosphere is the cornerstone of the school’s development, which requires joint efforts ofall faculty and students to create an all-round, whole-process andfull-participation education environment. This will lay a solid foundation fornurturing first-class talents and boost the development and future of aprestigious Law School with dignity.

During the assembly, theaward ceremony for the Juesheng Award for Outstanding Contributions toDiscipline Development and the Mingsi Award for Excellent Papers in EconomicLaw was held. Meanwhile, Dean Jiang Wuzhen issued appointment letters to theschool’steaching supervisors.

Professor Huang Zhongshun,drawing on his own experience in teaching and research, advised students toread extensively, think critically, commit fully to their studies and upholdmoral bottom lines in both personal conduct and academic pursuits. Student WuDongwei shared her learning experience in academic research, suggesting thatpeers should strengthen their autonomous learning abilities and actively integratethemselves into outstanding academic teams.

Aspart of the initiative to strengthen academic atmosphere, the School of Lawemphasized that academic rigor is a cornerstone of academic culture,and that research integrity is the bottom line of scholarly conduct.Ms.Wei Ping, Deputy Party Secretary and Secretary of the Discipline InspectionCommission of the School, delivered a research ethics education session to allfaculty and students. Drawing on typical real-life cases, she provided a vividand thought-provoking lecture on the importance of upholding academic standardsand maintaining ethical conduct in scientific research. This session served toreinforce awareness of academic norms, enhance students’ and faculty members’sense of responsibility, and promote a clean, honest, and rigorous academicresearch environment.

The Launching Ceremony of theAcademic Ethics Enhancement Year & General Assembly of Faculty and Studentsconcluded successfully. Moving forward, the Law School will integrate the soundacademic and teaching atmosphere into all aspects of school governance andtalent cultivation. It will leverage this positive atmosphere to advance thedevelopment of Double First-Class Initiative, and make greater contributions tothe cultivation of legal talents and the advancement of the rule of law inChina in the new era.
