Overview

According to training plans and requirements of SCUT undergraduates, and integrating with characteristics of our specialized field, the School of Law would respectively formulate study plans for Law and Intellectual Property Rights in the aspect of the talented training. The curriculum includes general courses, professional basic courses, professional required courses and professional selective courses. The academic credit system would be implemented and students must gain enough credits to achieve the Bachelor’s degree. Graduates of the School ofLaw could continue their study to gain the Master’s degree and the Doctor’s degree. Every year almost 22% graduates could be submitted to gain Master’s degree inside or outside the school. Undergraduates also could gain either dual professional certification or dual degrees by studying minor subject of other school. The school establishes scholarship and grants program to encourage students who are talented but financial challenged or significantly competent in study field.


Law Program

The Law Program was established upon three advantages. Firstly, is the location. SCUT was built in Guangzhou, neighboring Hong Kong and Macao, the southern area access to the Reform and Open-up, where numbers of qualified legal professionals are required because of its prosperous economics, high-level modernization and national-leading legal construction. Secondly, is the platform. SCUT is one of the prestigious universities directly attached to the Ministry of Education, which belongs to the national “211 project” and “985 project”, is able to provide a high-level platform for schools’ rapid development. Thirdly, is the reputation. SCUT, with a long educational history, a rich cultural heritage, an excellent undergraduate educational system and a significant research achievement, would provide a competent basis for shaping the talented that would be innovative and overall developed.

The Law Program is bound to develop the comprehensive-developed talented who could master basic concepts and theories of Law, familiar with China legislation, regulation and related policy, use legal theories to analyze and resolve real legal problems and possess a favorable level of foreign language, computer skills and language skills.

On curriculum, the School of Law settles such major courses: Jurisprudence, Chinese Legal History, Constitutional Law, Civil Law, Commercial Law, Economic Law, Criminal Law, Administrative Law and Administrative Procedural Law, Civil Procedural Law, Criminal Procedural Law, International Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Economic Law and Private International Law. Beside the 14 courses mentioned above, the School of Law intensifies the development of Economic Law, Intellectual Property Law and International Economic Law so as to let students embody advantages in these fields.

Graduates of the School of Law would be appropriate to work at the national legislature, judicial organs, procuratorial organs, law firms, arbitration institutions, public security agencies, customs, tax, industrial and commercial bureaus, governmental legal departments, or positions related to law in banks, CPAs, foreign enterprises, research institutions and so on.


Intellectual Property Rights Program

SCUT is the only key university of science an engineering that authorized to admit undergraduates who would be willing to major in Intellectual Property Rights by the Ministry of Education. As the advancing of both national and regional intellectual property rights implemental strategy, professionals of intellectual property rights are one of those talents needed by the society. Cantonese Intellectual Property Rights Strategy Program provides clearly that professionals of intellectual property rights, as a shortage, should be listed into the catalog of Cantonese mainly demanding.

The School of Law (the School of Intellectual Property Rights) settles Intellectual Property Rights Program in order to shape overall-developed talents that could master basic legal knowledge, process favorable theoretical accomplishment of intellectual property rights and ability of implementing; that heavily aware of the development in language and computer, would learn related knowledge in science, economy and management.

On the basis of systematically learning crucial curriculum of intellectual property rights, professional students mainly learn such courses below: Introduction on Intellectual Property Rights, Copyright Law, Patent Law, Trademark Law, Competition Law, Patent Literature Retrieval and Representation, Intellectual Property Rights Management, Internet Law, Technology Law, E-Commercial Law and so on. Besides, students major in intellectual property rights also need to select related courses in science and engineering, economics or management.

Graduates major in intellectual property rights would be appropriate to work at the national legislature, judicial organs, procuratorial organs, mega enterprises, law firms and IP intermediaries to achieve themselves related to intellectual property rights such as patent and trademark services.


Experiential Teaching

 During the process of shaping undergraduates, our school particularly pays attention to students’ practical ability. Integrated with characteristics of legal practice, our school settles legal experiential teaching experimental classes, clinical legal education, judicial simulation and other experiential courses. At the same time, in order to improve students’ applicability to the internationalization, British common law teaching innovative classes are settled to provide learning platforms for students who would enter international legal service market or continue their study abroad.

——Excellent juniors would be selected to build up legal experiential teaching experimental classes. Guest speakers from the field of legal practice would be invited; judges and lawyers would be employed to be tutors. The face-to-face guidance would be implemented to strengthen students’ experiential ability.

——Clinical legal education would be settled to juniors, and faculties with judicial practice experience would be employed to guide students participate into legal consult and legal aid, which let students practice and accumulate practical experience during handling real or simulated cases.

——During doctrinal courses are being taught, faculties or students could establish judicial simulation to simulate a trial. Students play different roles to experience judicial process and exercise legal professional skills.

——Selective test would be held among freshmen to build up British common law teaching innovative classes, which begins on the second semester of freshman and ends on the first semester of junior. THE INNOVATIVE CLASSES ARE BEING HELD DURING 2 YEARS, 4 SEMESTERS EACH PERIOD.
