As a vital bridge and link in the mutual appreciation of civilizations and the process of globalization, translation plays a strategic role in disseminating Chinese wisdom, constructing discourse systems that integrate Chinese and international perspectives, and enhancing the effectiveness of international communication. Translation competence in the context of international organizations is not only a technical support for cross-cultural communication but also a core competency in cultivating global governance talent. It is directly related to China's participation in international rule-making, the promotion of multilateral institutional reform, and the enhancement of discourse power in global governance. To enrich the campus culture of South China University of Technology (SCUT), create a platform for translation exchange, language learning, and self-expression, and strengthen the cultivation of talent for international organizations, it has been decided to hold the 7th South China University of Technology Kapok Cup Translation Competition and International Organization Document Translation Competition.
This competition is organized by the SCUT Committee of the Communist Youth League, and hosted by the SCUT MTI Education Center and the SCUT School of Foreign Languages Committee of the Communist Youth League. The specific arrangements for the competition are as follows:
I. Participants and Requirements
(1) Participants: Full-time students of SCUT (including international students).
(2) Requirements:
1. This competition includes four categories: Chinese-to-English translation, English-to-Chinese translation, Chinese-to-Japanese translation, and Japanese-to-Chinese translation. Participants may choose one or multiple categories. The source texts for the competition are available on the official website of the SCUT School of Foreign Languages and its WeChat public account (华工外院). The final interpretation authority rests with the organizing committee of the SCUT Kapok Cup Translation Competition and International Organization Document Translation Competition.
2. Entries must be independently completed by participants. Plagiarism or the use of machine translation is strictly prohibited. Violations will result in disqualification. Participants are required to keep their entries confidential until the submission deadline. Entries must not be published in any media, including newspapers, journals, or online platforms, prior to the deadline. Violations will result in disqualification, and participants will bear all consequences arising from such actions.
II. Participation Method
(1) Registration: Participants can obtain the source texts by accessing the competition announcement on the SCUT School of Foreign Languages website (http://www2.scut.edu.cn/sfl/) or the WeChat public account 华工外院. Submitting the translation to the designated email within the competition period constitutes successful registration.
(2) Submission Requirements for Entries:
1. Entries must be submitted to mticenter@scut.edu.cn by April 20, 2025 (inclusive). Entries submitted after 00:00 on April 20 will not be accepted, and participants will be considered to have forfeited their eligibility.
2. Entries must be submitted as electronic documents in WORD format. The default page margins should be used. Chinese text should be in SimSun font, English text in Times New Roman font, Japanese text in MS Gothic font, and all text should be in size 12 with 20-point line spacing.
3. The email subject and the entry file name should follow this format: Name + School + Phone Number + Translation Category (e.g., Zhang San + School of Foreign Languages + 13612345678 + Chinese-to-English). Participants are advised to double-check their personal information before submission to ensure accuracy.
4. The entry itself must not contain any personal information, such as the translator's name or address. Personal information should be provided on a cover page, including name, ID number, school, student ID, email address, and phone number. Entries without a cover page containing this information will be considered invalid. Only the first submission for each entry will be accepted; duplicate submissions will be disregarded.
III. Awards
The competition will award first, second, and third prizes, as well as several honorable mentions. Winners will receive certificates. If fewer than 10 entries are submitted for a specific translation category, the organizing committee reserves the right to cancel the awards for that category.
