Program Introduction
The Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) degree program aims to cultivate students' translation literacy and skills in areas such as translation of literature related to country and regional studies, business translation, and legal translation. The program’s talent development is grounded in the economic and social development needs of Guangdong Province, serving the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It leverages the university’s resource advantages by establishing industry-academia-research collaborative teaching platforms to foster students' innovative practical abilities and translation skills. This discipline actively interfaces with and serves the university’s strengths in other fields. Simultaneously, it capitalizes on the School’s academic strengths in Business English and Country and Regional Studies to enhance students' practical translation capabilities in these areas, as well as in business and law. The program is dedicated to cultivating high-level, application-oriented, specialized, and professional written translation talents.
I. Program Objectives
To cultivate high-level, application-oriented, and specialized Japanese translation professionals who are well-rounded in moral, intellectual, and physical development, capable of meeting the demands of global economic integration, enhancing national international competitiveness, and contributing to the social, economic, and cultural advancement of the country.
II. Duration of Study
The full-time Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) program has a standard duration of 2 years. Students unable to complete their studies within this period due to special circumstances may apply for an extension, subject to the university’s relevant regulations.

IV. Training Methods
1. Credit System: Students must pass the required course examinations to earn credits for the respective courses. They must complete the stipulated total credits to become eligible to write their degree thesis. Upon successful thesis defense, students may apply for the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) degree through the designated degree application procedures.
2. Seminar-Based Teaching: Practical seminar-based teaching methods are employed. Translation courses may adopt project-based instruction, integrating real-world professional translation tasks into classroom activities. Translation laboratories or computer-aided translation labs are utilized to enhance the authenticity and practicality of translation skills training.
3. Emphasis on Practical Training: MTI students specializing in written translation are required to complete at least six months of professional internship in government departments or relevant enterprises and institutions. The development of practical translation skills and the analysis of translation cases are prioritized, with translation practice integrated throughout the entire teaching process. Students must submit translated works totaling more than 150,000 characters upon enrollment.
4. University-Industry Collaboration: The program promotes collaboration with enterprises by inviting experienced professionals from the translation industry or related fields to serve as external MTI supervisors. Leveraging the university’s Industry Experts in the Classroom initiative, joint training and collaborative guidance by internal and external supervisors are facilitated.
V. Credit Requirements and Course Learning
The MTI degree curriculum consists of required courses and elective courses. The total credits required are no less than 46, including 24 credits from required courses, 18 credits from elective courses, and 4 credits from professional practice.
VI. Required Components
1. Professional Practice: MTI students specializing in written translation must submit translated works totaling more than 150,000 characters upon enrollment and complete a cumulative professional internship of no less than two months in government departments or relevant enterprises and institutions. Relevant materials must be submitted in accordance with the university’s graduate training management regulations.
2. Lecture Reports: During their studies, MTI students specializing in written translation are required to attend at least five academic lectures or seminars. For each attendance, they must complete the South China University of Technology Graduate Student Lecture Registration and Attendance Form.
