According to the Ministry of education, 3560 courses have become the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses in 2019, including 717 online first-class courses, 327 virtual simulation experiment teaching first-class courses, 1464 offline first-class courses, 868 online and offline hybrid first-class courses, and 184 social practice first-class courses. The “academic English” course of our school won the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses—Online first-class course recognition. A total of 5 courses in the University were recognized as online first-class courses.

The course was developed by the National College English teaching team of the school of Foreign Studies of South China University of Technology. It has been open to social learners on the Chinese MOOC platform “school online” since 2017. The course aims to cultivate and improve learners’ academic literacy, innovation ability, and international communication ability. At present, six rounds of the online course have been opened, with more than 60000 registered learners, realizing a wider sharing of high-quality teaching resources.

“Academic English” can be accessed at the “xuexi. cn” platform and was rated as the first-class undergraduate course in Guangdong Province in 2019. Professor Han Jinlong, the course leader, is a famous teacher in Guangdong Province and the host of the national excellent resource sharing course of “College English”. The keynote teachers are members of the national teaching team of “College English”. The course teaches English language skills and learning skills required for professional learning and research of various disciplines and aims to cultivate students' ability to use English for academic learning and academic communication, help them expand their international vision, and improve their ability to participate in international competition. The main contents of the course include how to understand academic lectures and how to read English professional documents quickly and effectively; How to improve academic writing ability; How to effectively participate in group discussions, make personal statements, etc.
