On June 18th, 2020, the National College English Teaching Team of the School of Foreign Languages “gathered” again in the “cloud”. In the special period of epidemic prevention and control, Vice President Xu Ying presided over the final summary conference of the College English Teaching Team in this semester through Tencent Meeting.
At first, Vice President Xu Ying summarized the teaching work and achievements of the College English Team in this semester. According to the overall arrangement of university and college, all the teachers of the College English Teaching Team that led by Chief Professor Han Jinlong, including two teachers in Wuhan, worked hard to overcome various difficulties, carried out online teaching orderly, and successfully completed all the teaching tasks in this semester. Hence, the teaching progress is not affected by the epidemic at all. Moreover, the teaching effect is extremely excellent, which has been widely praised by students, parents, school authorities and other universities.
During the special period of “Fighting against the Epidemic”, the College English Teaching Team led in the charge. Dozens of teachers volunteered to participate in the school’s epidemic prevention and control work. Xu Ying and Cui Junyi, the two teachers of the team were selected into the school’s Party Member Commandos. Meanwhile, Deng Renhua, Fang Jiuhua, Zhan shuangjuan and Mei Xuan, these four teachers were selected into the school’s Youth Commandos. In order to publicize the high-quality teaching work of front-line teachers under the epidemic, the College English Party Branch carefully produced a propaganda video entitled “Suspended Class, Ongoing Teaching; Suspended Class, Ongoing Learning” and submitted it to the Organization Department of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Education Working Committee, which contributed their own strength to the school’s epidemic prevention and control work, but also conveyed their spirit of dedication and fighting, taking the responsibility bravely and leading the charge.
In the first half of this year under the epidemic, the College English Teaching Team made a number of achievements with the previous efforts and accumulation. The team led by President Zhong Shuneng and Professor Han Jinlong won the first prize of Higher Education Teaching Achievement in Guangdong Province. China Education Daily featured the MOOC “Zhuangzi’s Fables and Wisdom”, which was led by Associate Professor Zhou Pingdi of the College English Teaching Team. This is another English open online course that was carefully crafted by the team after the course “British and American Music and Culture” was awarded the National Excellent Online Open Course. Academic English, led by Professor Han Jinlong, has also been shortlisted as the National Excellent Online Open Course in 2019, which would be the second National Excellent Online Open Course of the college. In addition, the College English Team has also organized some activities, such as “Teaching Materials, Teaching Methods, and Evaluation: Mixed Teaching Practice of Academic English -- Academic English Teaching Workshop and Online Open Course of South China University of Technology, and the seminar of “Southern Guangdong Foreign Language Teacher Lecture Hall Held by the Foreign Teachers Club”(the 7th session), which has attracted more than 500 College English teachers across the country to participate online at the same time and received enthusiastic response.
In the second agenda of this meeting, Teacher Fang Jiuhua arranged and deployed the College English final exam, which will be held in the summer vacation in August. Teacher Zhan Shuangjuan interpreted the relevant policies of ideological and political course, and elaborated the current situation, the future trend and the planning of it in College English. Besides, Teacher Zhou Pingdi shared her rich experience in the construction of MOOC in general education and put forward suggestions for the future development of MOOC. Zhao Shijun, Zhu Lin, Zhang Linlin, Cui Ling, Lei Lei, Cui Junyi and other teachers also analyzed and summarized the current situation of Class B Comprehensive Course teaching management, Academic English Course management, Foreign Teacher Course management, College English Listening and Speaking Course, Language Center construction and so on.
In the end, Chief Professor Han Jinlong, the leader of the College English Teaching Team, made a summary of the conference and assigned tasks such as the ideological and political construction of College English Courses, the development of Academic English Courses, and the production of General Education MOOCs for the next semester.
The College English Teaching Team is an important member of the big family of the School of Foreign Languages. With the joint efforts of all teachers, the team has become more and more brave, and achieved more and more achievements, which encouraged all the teachers greatly. All the teachers of the College English Teaching Team will continue to carry forward the spirit of responsibility as the member of South China University of Technology. They will also plan ahead, accumulate steadily and work together, and earnestly implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, and also give full play to the important role of the College English Teaching Team in the construction of ideological and political course.
