From October 25th to 26th, 2019, postgraduate student forum for Chinese-Japanese translation was held in Lecture Hall 4502, Building No.4 as scheduled to further promote the development of Japanese translation major of SFL and improve the quality of applied talents training. The forum host, the School of Foreign Languages of South China University of Technology, invited well-known scholars of Japanese major and translation in China to visit it. The forum was also involved by teachers of Japanese Department and all postgraduate students of translation major of SFL.
This forum contained two parts. First, on 25th, a sub-forum was held with postgraduate students as the main participants, which was divided into four sub-meeting places, where students made special reports and teachers commented. A total of 20 postgraduate students made presentations, while experts and teachers made corresponding comments and suggestions. Second, on 26th, experts and scholars gave lectures focused on such topics as the importance of syntax expression in the process of Sino-Japanese translation, ‘style’ and ‘application’ of translation studies and thinking and exploration of Japanese MTI education. Experts and scholars centered on issues including Chinese-Japanese translation and discipline construction to discuss, and gave a wonderful and vivid lesson to postgraduate students.

Professor Li Guodong from Zhejiang Gongshang University, Professor Tong Jun from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Ou Wendong from School of International Relations, Professor Ding Guoqi from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Professor Wang Baofeng from Jinan University, Professor Lin Shaohua from Ocean University of China, Professor Lin Qinghua from Guangdong University of Technology, Senior Translator Ms. Wang Jianming, Professor Chen Duoyou from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and many other guests from other universities attended the opening ceremony of the academic forum. At the opening ceremony, Liu Yingsi, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages, South China University of Technology, delivered a speech on behalf of the host. He warmly welcomed the experts and scholars, looked forward to their valuable suggestions and advice to promote Intercultural and Translation Studies to a new level with joint efforts, and wished the forum a complete success.
Speech by Liu Yingsi, Party Secretary of SFL
In the morning forum, experts and scholars made keynote speeches respectively, elaborating on Japanese-Chinese translation and other issues. Professor Li Guodong from the School of Oriental Language and Culture, Zhejiang Gongshang University talked about the issues of meaning equivalence and style equivalence in literary translation. He deeply felt the inadequate development of Chinese translation theory and wished its further development. Professor Tong Jun of Sun Yat-sen University thinks about translation standards, discusses the influence of translation aesthetic mechanism, and gives enlightenment to MTI postgraduate students' translation study and practice. Professor Ou Wendong from the Japanese Department of the School of International Relations emphasized the importance of Skopos theory to the Japanese translation of the work reports of the two associations, and pointed out that the translation of government documents pursues a country-based translation, evidence in translation and no shadow in translation. Professor Ding Guoqi of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies talked freely about the construction of translation theory in China, and thought that the West should tap the existing traditional translation theories in China, actively absorb the resources of western translation theories and promote the development of translation studies. Professor Wang Baofeng of Jinan University discussed the importance of syntactic expression in Sino-Japanese translation based on the related theories of syntactic expression between Chinese and Japanese.
Keynote speeches by experts and scholars
In the afternoon keynote speech, Professor Lin Shaohua from the School of Foreign Languages, Ocean University of China started with getting a room (getting a study room), which made people laugh. The humorous beginning suddenly waked everyone up in the afternoon. Then, taking Haruki Murakami's translation as an example, Professor Lin Shaohua pointed out that translation is a special kind of native language writing. correctness is not always the most important thing in literary translation, whereas spirituality is the most important thing in translation. As for how to cultivate this spirituality, people still need to accumulate a lot. Professor Lin Qinghua of Guangdong University of Technology emphasized that a good translation should be revised, that translation should be like writing and that the translation should be clean and tidy, and specifically pointed out the necessity, objectives, difficulties and methods of translation revision. Wang Jianming, the principal of Shanghai Huangpu District Yucheng Translation Training Center, discussed the shortcomings of teaching and learning in Japanese teaching, and proposed to improve the teaching methods and teaching contents of college Japanese education. Professor Chen Duoyou of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies put forward his thoughts on the subject construction of Japanese MTI, pointing out that it is necessary to further clarify the subject connotation, change the educational concept, build professional teachers and cultivate innovative models. Associate Professor Li Bo, head of the Japanese Department of the School of Foreign Languages, South China University of Technology, made a concluding speech on the two-day forum, highly affirmed the achievements of the forum and laid great hopes in the construction and development of the Chinese-Japanese translation discipline in the future.

The forum came to a successful conclusion, and all the teachers and students at the meeting said that they had gained a lot. They all expressed that they had new thoughts on the professional field after listening to the reports and communicating with experts and scholars. They also hoped that the forum would be held as scheduled in the next year to jointly conduct academic discussions and promote the development of the discipline.
