Students of South China University of Technology as contestants in the Campus Selection for “FLTRP” Cup National English Speaking Competition to Celebrate the Birthday of the Motherland

    2019 English Speaking Competition of SCUT & Campus Selection for “FLTRP” Cup National English Speaking Competition was successfully held in Yifu Humanities Hall on the afternoon of September 28th. The competition was hosted by the Academic Affairs Office and undertaken by the School of Foreign Languages. A total of 76 students from all majors in the university signed up for this competition. After strict selection in the preliminary round, 16 players stood out and entered the final stage.

     The final consisted of two sessions: the first session was a three-minute keynote speech on the theme of My ‘Big Story’ in 2049: ____; the second session was a two-minute impromptu speech and a two-minute question-and-answer session. The contestants showed the high-quality and international style of SCUT students with their fluent expressions, calm and confident attitudes, wonderful speech contents and elegant manners. They expressed their opinions and imagined what efforts and contributions talents who were the pillars of the motherland could make for the country and society in the next 30 years, adding a splendid touch to the birthday of the motherland with practical actions. In the end, after two rounds of fierce competition, Xie Yingxin from School of Law and He Mingjie from School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Second Runner-up winners, would represent SCUT to participate in the finals of the “FLTRP” Cup National English Speaking Competition in Guangdong Province. After the competition, many spectators said that the contest was exciting, and they learned a lot from the excellent performances of the speakers.

Attachment: Introduction of “FLTRP” Cup


The FLTRP Cup National English Speaking Competition, a public welfare competition for college students nationwide, is jointly organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Publishing House, the College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education and the College English Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. Founded in 2002, the competition has attracted wide attention at home and abroad, and has become an English speaking competition with the largest number of participants, the largest scale and the highest level in the country.

The rematch of the “FLTRP” Cup National English Speaking Competition in Guangdong Province & Guangdong University Student Speech Competition, sponsored by Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, Guangdong Undergraduate College English Teaching Steering Committee and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, is the most authoritative and influential events in English speaking competitions for university students in Guangdong province.

       On December 14th, 2017, “Evaluation Results of Innovative Talents Training and Discipline Competition in Chinese Colleges and Universities” was pre-released in Hangzhou by the “Research on Competition Evaluation and Management System in Colleges and Universities” Expert Working Group of China Higher Education Society. Subject competition evaluation follows the principles of fairness, justice, openness, guidance, operability, classification and results-oriented. Based on publicly available data and the university students competition funding projects and competition influence released by the Ministry of Education in 2007, 2008 and 2010, 19 domestic competition projects with wide influence were selected. The only English competition on the list is the “FLTRP” Cup National English Speaking Competition.
