Representatives of CET team attended the meeting
Last weekend, the 2nd session of China English for Academic Purposes (EAP) High-end forum and the inaugural meeting of China Scientific English Research Association were held in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The theme of this forum is Innovation, Integration, and Development — Dialogue between Language and Science. The representatives of the college English teaching (CET) team from the School of Foreign Languages of South China University of Technology, led by Professor Han Jinlong, a famous teacher in Guangdong Province, attended the parallel team forum, and shared the teaching practice of their creating the “golden course” (first-class course in the provincial or national level) of EAP. In the meanwhile, Professor Han Jinlong was appointed as the vice president of China Scientific English Research Association.
China Scientific English Research Association aims to contact teachers, scholars and other related social figures in the field of scientific English in China, actively carry out academic activities of scientific English, enhance related academic exchanges at home and abroad, strengthen close cooperation between academic circles and industries, and make pioneering contributions to the improvement of the level of scientific English in China.
The high-end forum invited Professor Bradley Hughes of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Joshua Schimel of the University of California-Santa Barbara, Professor Cai Jigang of Fudan University, Professor Wang Haixiao of Nanjing University and many other top experts in the field of EAP at home and abroad to give keynote speeches. Special teams from 13 universities have conducted in-depth exchanges in the teaching, learning and testing of general EAP and English for specific purposes, shared the curriculum system and textbook compilation for undergraduates, postgraduates, and doctors respectively, displayed the latest teaching mode and evaluation results driven by new teaching concepts and educational technologies, and explored the different influences of new English teaching mode on learners' learning under the Internet + education environment.
In the parallel team forum, Professor Han Jinlong introduced the construction and application of the Academic English Language Center in Guangzhou International Campus in detail. Associate Professor Xu Ying gave a report entitled Application of Formative Assessment in EAP teaching, and Teacher Zhu Lin gave a report entitled EAP Teaching Practice in EMI Teaching Environment — Taking Guangzhou International Campus of South China University of Technology as an example, which showed the recent achievements of EAP teaching and research in SCUT in various aspects and received great attention from experts and peers present.
Our academic English teaching team actively participated in international and domestic seminars (for example, in May this year, we attended the 5th Annual Meeting of China English for Academic Purposes Teaching Research Association. At this meeting, Professor Han Jinlong was appointed as the vice president of China English for Academic Purposes Research Association), exchanging teaching and research accomplishments with peers at home and abroad, enhancing its influence in China. At the same time, it constantly absorbed the advanced experience of other schools and improved the teaching mode to contribute to the constructions of our school's double first-class coursesand Guangzhou International Campus.
