Professor Cai Jigang, doctoral supervisor, School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University, was invited to deliver a lecture entitled “Academic English: Orientation of Foreign Language Teaching in Chinese Universities in the new era” on the afternoon of July 12th, 2018. The lecture was hosted by Professor Han Jinlong.

Professor Cai proposed the main contradiction of foreign language education in colleges and universities in China, namely, the desire of college students to acquire and exchange professional information in their fields did not match with the current orientation of college English teaching in China. Professor Cai suggested that the effective solution to solve this imbalance was to carry out academic English teaching. Furthermore, from the perspective of the role and nature of academic English in higher education, he suggested that the generally original English teaching should be improved to the one that met the needs of academic discipline development and students’ professional learning. At last, Professor Cai shared the specific methods of academic English teaching.
Sparking new ideas to teachers and students, this lecture had significantly guided teachers in SFL college, SCUT to optimize academic English teaching to some extent.
